2009 Honda Fit Sport Trailer Hitch Recommendation for Towing a Small Trailer

Updated 02/17/2026 | Published 06/16/2024

Question:

I have a 2009 Honda Fit sports. I need to put a hitch on this car in order to tow a small 5x8 trailer that weighs 400 lb. With a riding lawn mower in the trailer. The riding lawn mower weighs about 525 lb. What do you recommend?

Hey Jeff, thanks for reaching out!

I prefer the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11064 for your 2009 Honda Fit Sport because it has a collar on it so it's a little more robust and easy to use than the Draw-Tite alternative that doesn't have a collar.

You'll also need a wiring harness for the lights on your trailer and for that I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118420 as it has the best module on it and it tees in behind your tail lights so you won't have to splice into your OEM wiring.

A ball mount kit is the last thing you need to tow your trailer. When we installed the Curt hitch on a 2009 Fit we found the receiver height to measure 9-1/2" so with that knowledge you'll want to refer to the linked helpful article to choose the correct ball mount for your application.

Last but not least, be sure to check your owner's manual for any instructions on towing so you can do so safely with your Honda Fit.

Hey Jeff, how did things go with the Curt hitch and wiring harness on your Honda Fit? Did the setup handle your trailer and mower the way you needed? Your update could make it easier for the next person towing with a small car.
