Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located inside your trunk, behind the tail lights on both the driver's side and passenger's side. You will need to remove some interior trim or carpeting to access the harness.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed within your trunk.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Circuit-Protected Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. The tail light converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

This converter safeguards itself and your vehicle against possible electrical shorts and overloads with integrated short circuit protection. Just install the connector as indicated and rest assured that the wiring system of your vehicle will remain feedback-free.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2011 Mazda 3

Today on this 2011 Mazda 3, we're going to install part number 118420, this is a T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with a 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector. Now to install our wire harness, we have to get inside the vehicle and remove some access panels so we can make our connections and also route wires from the driver's side over to the passenger's side. Let's go ahead and take this panel and get it out of our way and this foam insert can be pushed out of the way as well. Let's go ahead and get this panel opened up here because our connections will be right back here. Let's go to the passenger's side and get the panel out of the way. Now we need to also loosen up our threshold here, there's a plastic rivet on each side, just pull out the center and then pull out the rivet. This will be the passenger's side one.

We should be able to pull straight up from the bottom with steady pressure and it should pop out. Now we need to loosen up this panel so we can sneak our wires from underneath inside here. There's another plastic rivet and then we've got to loosen up this tie-down right here. Pop the lid open and use a 10mm socket to remove it. There's a plastic rivet about right here, a gentle pull and some pressure and it will pull it loose. Now we can slip our wires from the inside to the outside.

We're done with the driver's side for now, let's do the same thing on the passenger's side. At this point we can go ahead and start putting our wires into place. Now I'll make one connection at a time, starting with our T-connector with the yellow wire. We'll route this from behind here and this will hook up to our turn signal on the driver's side. Basically unplug the connection point going to the taillight and this will T into place. Now each one has its own special shape so it's hard to get these in the wrong spot.

A good way to identify them is to go ahead and turn on the turn signal and see which one flashes behind the socket. We'll go ahead and disconnect our light and all you've got to do is just push this tab right here to release it and we'll put our T-connector into place. Our wire harness plugs into one half and this half goes back into the taillight. This is our T-connector that will handle the running light circuit and the brake light circuit. We'll go ahead and turn on our running lights and locate the socket we need, take it apart and put our T-connector back in place. Next, we'll go ahead and work with our white with the ring terminal that will go to ground so we'll run it to the sheet metal. To make things a little easier, we'll go ahead and pull it back out and we'll go ahead and ground it to the sheet metal right in this general area here.

Now we're using a self-tapping screw that comes with the kit and we're using a drill with a 1/4 inch hex bit driver. Next, we'll go ahead and attach our module to the sheet metal back here, we'll clean off some sheet metal using some rubbing alcohol and then we'll use adhesive that's one module to attach it. We'll go ahead and run our T-connector with the green wire across to the passenger's side. We'll route it behind the panel and we'll go ahead and look for our turn signal. We'll go ahead and plug it into place. Now at this point, we can go ahead and start reassembling the vehicle. We'll also take a moment to go ahead and secure our wire going across. Now there's a variety of ways of doing this, I think the most simplest, most effective since it's all going to be covered up anyway is just use some packing tape to help hold it in place. When we route our wires we want to make sure we stay away from this point right here so we just pulled the wires up towards the top. Let's just bundle it up here and use some zip ties to take up the excess. As we put our interior components back together, we'll leave our 4-Pole to stay with our jack for storage. We'll go ahead and put our floor components back into place. Let's go ahead and show how to use it if we need to, let's go ahead and open up the hatch here and pull out the 4-Pole. We'll go ahead and pull it out and shut the hatch back into place and when we need to use it, we'll just go ahead and pull it out and shut the hatch on it. The door seal is thick enough where it won't hurt anything when you shut it, just do not put it by the latch. Pull out what we need to go down to our trailer hitch. It's also a good idea to try out the 4-Pole with a tester before you try it on a trailer. Now using a light tester, we'll ground to the white wire and then our brown wire will be the running light circuit, yellow will be our left turn, green will be our right turn and our brake signal will be a solid signal on both the yellow and green wires. It looks like everything works and with that, that will finish it for our install, part number 118420, the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with a 4-Pole Flat on our 2011 Mazda 3. .

Install of wiring was fairly easy, made harder because I'm way worse at this than I think I am. Hardest part was figuring a place to stick the module, and finding something to stick it with. Box says it comes with double sided tape, but mine, at least, did not. Best to have some sticky stuff on hand just in case my experience is the norm, and not the exception. Literally just unplugging wires and plugging them back in, but in a better, more different configuration. Lights work. I know because I tried it. The wire the 4-pin connector is on is long, but maybe not long enough? It's long enough for my use case, but I can definitely see a longer trailer tongue or a shorter trailer cable causing an issue. A longer cable would be nice, but I'm sure a 4-pin extension would suffice as well. Every other cable/wire is more than long enough, so no issues with getting it across the trunk of the car to the other brake lights. 4 stars, because of the lack of included (per the box, anyway) double-sided tape and a just-barely-long-enough cable could be a foot longer and stop worrying me. Quality otherwise is good. 655481

2014 Honda Civic

Installed hitch and wiring harness in a 2014 Civic sedan. Be very sure to specify exactly the correct car when ordering since the fitments are very specific--as I found out when I ordered a harness for a Civic without being sure to get a sedan's harness instead of a coupe's! E-trailer was very good to immediately send me the correct harness and accept back my erroneous order. The hitch is a two-person installation. I did it by myself with an extreme amount of effort to hold the muffler out of the way while threading the attachment bolt above the muffler. Three hands are essential--or else a lot of wood blocks and fine-grained metal bending. Once attached it is a very solid hitch and it is nearly invisible below the back end of the car. Yet the hookup has plenty of access for a trailer. 647910

I watched an internet how-to video to see how to access the car's wiring. Adding the trailer wiring was very easy. I'll be using this for a small utility trailer mostly hauling green waste. I've wired previous vehicles by clipping to wires going to the various lights but the computer-monitored lights on newer vehicles won't allow that. This was an easy way to accommodate the newer technology. Angela from E-trailer was knowledgeable and pleasant to work with and got the right part to me without a hitch (no pun intended). 618048

For my Mazda 3 Speed, I ordered both the hitch and the wiring harness. Both were a perfect match and installed on the vehicle very easily. The instructions were clear. You are correct, the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness, item # 118420, is designed to tow a trailer with your Fit, not to tow the Fit behind a motorhome. We can help you get your 2009 Mazda 3 Grand Touring Edition ready for your utility trailer. Curt Class I hitch # C11386 is a good choice along with ball mount # C45016. You will also need a hitch ball, either 2-inch ball # A-82 or 1-7/8-inch ball # A-80. Just check the coupler on the trailer; it will be stamped or have a sticker to indicate the ball size required. This hitch has a 2000-lb trailer weight rating, meaning that the loaded trailer and its contents must remain within that...

  • Comparing Curt Trailer Hitch # C11085 and # 11496 for a 2008 Honda Accord
The differences between Curt Trailer Hitch # C11085 and # 11496 are so few, it really only comes down to aesthetics. Both hitches have the same capacity, they install the same way, and they both come with a ball mount, pin and clip. Besides price, the only differences is in the cross tubing. Trailer hitch # 11496 is at a direct angle while # C11085 is more of a gentle curve. A lot of people want as much of the hitch hidden as possible so I would go with # 11496. I have included a link to...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch Wiring for a 2010 Mazda 3 Towing a Small Trailer
If you have the 2010 Mazda 3 with Grand Touring LED tail lights package, then I recommend the Tow Ready wiring part # 119179KIT. It will have built-in short circuit protection and eliminate draw on the tail light circuit. The kit # 119179KIT will include a wiring harness, install kit, circuit tester, quick splice wiring connectors and a integrated 4-pole cover. On the other hand, if your 2010 Mazda 3 doesn't have the Grand Touring LED tail lights package, then go with the Tow Ready...

  • Choosing Correct Hitch for 2013 Mazda 3 Sedan
When you are choosing a hitch, it makes no difference if your Mazda 3 has incandescent or LED taillights as the taillight assemblies have no bearing on the fit of the hitch. The Draw-Tite Class I receiver you referenced, part # 24842 will fit regardless of which taillights your vehicle uses. Grand Touring models of the Mazda 3 are equipped with LED taillights, which will make a difference if you are wanting to install a trailer wiring harness. If you do NOT have the LED lamps, you can...

  • Can a 2008 Honda Civic Sedan with Manual Transmission Tow 325-Lb Boat/Trailer
Your 325-lb boat and trailer combination is a fairly light tow load but just the same the car maker gets the final word on whether towing anything is advisable. You can check your owner's manual for your specific vehicle since it will reflect the particular version you have (DX, LX, EX, or EX-L) and its capacities. The online version of the owner's manual that I reviewed (page 215) does not prohibit towing in general, so that's a good start. Check your manual (or with your dealership by...
