Since there isn't any custom-fit trailer hitches for a 1978 VW Bus, what you'll need is a universal weld-on hitch. For that you just need to measure your frame width from outside to outside and if you need any specific drop for the receiver to clear the bumper.
If your frame width is between 18 inches and 44 inches, you can choose from the Curt Class V Universal Weld-on Receiver Hitch and Brackets with 10.865" Drop # 15902 or Curt Class V Universal Weld-on Receiver Hitch and Brackets with 3" Drop # 15901.
