I was not able to find any ballard winches, but perhaps you mean Badland winch? I looked at the owner's manual for the Badland 9000lb truck/suv winch and they recommend a battery with a minimum of 650 cold cranking amps (CCA).
If you are hooking the winch up to a battery that is not on your vehicle and you plan to use it frequently, then I recommend going with a deep cycle / marine grade battery that has at least 650 CCA. This will hold up better since it is made to be drained and recharged many times. For example, my utility trailer has a deep cycle marine battery to power the trailer's winch and it lasts a very long time on a single charge. A standard starter battery on your vehicle will work fine if it is the vehicle's primary battery that is hooked up to the alternator.
