Absolutely our Tongue Weight Scale # e99044 will work perfectly with your travel trailer! Our scale has a 2,000 lb capacity which you may think that a 5,000 lb trailer would be too much for our scale, but it's actually an ideal size trailer.
What a tongue weight scale does is measure the tongue weight of the trailer. Tongue weight is the down force weight your loaded trailer on the hitch ball of your tow vehicle. What we want is 10-15% of the overall weight of your trailer. Which with your 5,000 lb trailer we will be looking for 500-750 lbs of tongue weight and our gauge goes up to 2,000 lbs.
If you were to load up an extra 1,000 lbs on your trailer you will still be able to use our scale to achieve the 10-15% gross weight of the trailer. Just a quick tip and reason why you should grab our scale compared to any other. My quick tip for getting the 10-15% is to shift whatever you're hauling around on the trailer because that's the easiest way to change your tongue weight in my experience. Keep this in mind whenever your loading up your gear and also try to get about 60% of your cargo up in front of your trailer axle and the remaining 40% around the middle of the trailer right above the axle if at all possible.
Another reason why you should grab our scale is because you will not need to grab a jack or blocks of wood to use it unlike the Sherline. Ours is tall enough so there is no need to rig something up to try and get an accurate reading. Lastly, my favorite part about this is, once you get your cargo all loaded up odds are it will already be hooked up to your tow vehicle. If that's the case and you aren't getting the 10-15% we're looking for, with other scales you would have to unhook the trailer to measure, re-hook up the trailer to move cargo around and then unhook the trailer to be able to measure the tongue weight again. I don't like that because it's an absolute waste of time in my opinion. Our scale can be used either at the coupler, or if your trailer is already hooked up, it can but used on the trailer jack tube! Super convenient and a better use of your time.
I've included a video to show you how our scale works and how it sets itself apart from all the other scales out there!
