The Hopkins Engager Trailer Break-Away Kit works by applying 12 volts of power to the trailer brakes when the plastic key is pulled out of the switch box allowing the circuit to be completed and power applied from the breakaway battery.
If the trailer coupler should come off of the trailer ball, the safety cable pulls the key out and the connection is made to stop the trailer. The included rechargeable battery is charged by the auxiliary power wire from the tow vehicle which must be connected through the trailer connector. When the trailer brakes are engaged by the breakaway battery they are held for at least 15 minutes or until the power connection is disconnected.
I have posted a link to the instructions that has a diagram of the typical hookup and a product description video of the # 20099 break away system.
