Installing Replacement Handles for Yakima SkyBox

Question:

Hi, I found your replacement super latch handle sets on your site. Looks like what Im needing for my Yakima Skybox. The problem is that BOTH of my handles are stripped and I cant get inside of the box from either side. Ill likely have to drill these out or something but wanted to check with the experts you first to get recommendations for parts to order and how to go about it so I dont permanently damage the unit. Any advice?

The correct replacement handles for a Yakima SkyBox made from 2009 on is the Replacement SuperLatch Handle Assemblies for Yakima SkyBox Rooftop Cargo Boxes # Y8880348.

These come in a quantity of two with lock cores and keys, so you have the right part. I'm not quite sure what you are referencing by the handles being stripped. The only way to remove them is for the handles to be unlockable and then you will need to unscrew them from the inside. If there is no way to open the box there isn't any way to install them so the box has to be open. If the issue is the locks are stuck you may have to use a local locksmith in order to get the handles out.

I have a limp lever on my Yakima Skybox 21. Is there a fix?

@Paulie If yours has the SuperLatch # Y8880348 and the handle is acting lazy then that sounds like the spring might be worn out. Have you been able to look at it internally to see what's going on?

@JonG I haven’t look at the inside mechanism. It b opens from one side but as you probably know, very hard to clamp it down from other side. What should I look for on the broken handle side from inside the Sky box?

@Paulie If you click on the hyperlinked part number for the SuperLatch Handles # Y8880348 there is a photo of the back side of the handle. Go to that photo and you'll see the spring I'm talking about. I unfortunately don't have a way to add a photo directly to this thread at this point in time.
