What is Difference Between Malone MicroSport and EcoLight Trailers

Updated 05/11/2020 | Published 05/06/2020

Question:

Trying to understand the differences between the Malone EcoLight Low max and the Micro Sport for 2 bikes 2 kayaks. I see the wider tires on the XtraLight - and assume thats better for gravel, but wondering about the other differences, like stability on the highway etc. and why there is a substantial difference in cost. I contacted Malone and they just directed me to their spec. sheets!

The big difference between the two trailers is the EcoLight trailers like part # MAL43FR were made to be lighter weight for smaller vehicles and have lower weight capacities. This weighs 145 lbs and has a 400 lb capacity whereas the MicroSport # MPG461KB weighs 240 lbs and has an 800 lb capacity. So it comes down to what you are looking to carry and your tow vehicle which would make most sense to go with.

My vehicle has a tow capacity of 2,000lbs so weight is not an issue. I am more concerned with stability on the highway with less bounce (is the heavier trailer better for that?) and will the the micro sport with narrower tires be ok for short stretches of gravel?

The heavier MicroSport Trailer # MPG461KB is definitely the better option for stability on the road, especially if you ever plan on towing the trailer empty. You're right to think that a bit more weight will cut down on a lot of that "bounce" on the highway. The narrow tires won't have any issues on gravel roads.
