Can 1,500 lb Trailer Axle be Swapped for 3,500 lb Axle
Question:
Good day I have a 10x7 utility trailer with 1500 lb axle with no brakes or brake flange. I was wondering if I could swap out the 1500 lb axle with a 3500 lb axle with electric brakes? The trailer frame seems to be made out of angle iron, not sure how thick maybe 1/4inch but looks professionally welded and sturdy. The local weld shop suggests buying a new axle with brake flange instead of trying to weld one on. Thnx in advance

What you are looking to do is very possible. It would just be a matter of picking out the 3,500 lb capacity trailer axle that matches the dimensions your trailer needs. Also, the welder you spoke with is spot-on with recommending buying an axle with the flange already installed as they are actually harder than you'd think to weld on since it requires special jigs so that the alignment is right.
So to pick out an axle the two important dimensions you need is the distance from hub face to hub face and the distance between the spring seats. With those figures you can easily pick out a new 3,500 lb axle. I attached a picture that shows these areas to measure. I also attached a link to a page that has all of the 3,500 lb axles we carry as well. We don't every every possible axle length so if you need something we don't carry you would want to find a local trailer shop that has ability to order custom axles.
