Propane Regulator for a Modine 45K BTU Hot Dawg heater

Updated 01/03/2025 | Published 01/19/2019

Question:

Im looking to use a 100 lb portable propane tank and connect it to a Modine 45K BTU Hot Dawg heater to warm my garage workshop during these cold northeast days and nights. Modine specs require a inlet pressure of 12 - 14 W.C.. Can you recommend a regulator that meets their specs? For this application, do you a single stage or two stage regulator?

Yes, you should go with a dual stage like the MB Sturgis 2-Stage Propane Regulator part # 108220 for vertical or part # 108221 for horizontal because it can be adjusted to a 12" water column outlet. In order to do this you will need to remove the black cap and turn the valve until the correct pressure is achieved. This will require a flow meter so if you do not have one it will be best to take it to a professional to have done. It is currently set at 11" water column outlet which the manufacturer may allow. Also, if you need help deciding between vertical or horizontal just make sure to choose one where the vent is pointed up.

In order to then attach this regulator to your 100 lb tank you will need the MB Sturgis Sturgi-Stay Propane Fill Hose part # 100019-24 and the MB Sturgis Propane Adapter Fitting part # 204120-MBS. The outlet on the regulator is a 3/8" Female NPT. If you can let me know what fitting is on your heater I will see if we have the other hose you will need. The distance between your tank and heater would also be needed.

I am installing a Modine 75K BTU heater. The required inlet pressure is also between 12 - 14 in WC. What is the adjustment range on this #108221 regulator? Ideally I would like to be able to adjust to 13" WC.

@Colin Hey Colin, it looks like the MB Sturgis Horizontal 2-Stage Propane Regulator # 108221 has a 11" water column output but these can be adjusted higher to 12" if you take the black cap off and turn the valve underneath.

@BryceD Does it go higher than 12? I was asking to know what the adjustment range is.

@Colin It does not. The range is up to 11" WC.
