Can 15 Inch Wheel be Used as Spare on Trailer With 14 Inch Wheels

Published 11/07/2018

Question:

I have an old trailer with 14 in wheels with the 5 on 5.5 lug pattern. I need a spare and can not find a wheel anywhere. Can I not use a 15 in wheel with a 5 on 5.5 pattern as long as theres enough room in the fender space? Thanks

In a pinch if you needed to change your wheel and just get home you can get by with a larger 15" wheel with a 5 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern like the Taskmaster # TTW550555WS1 (wheel only) or Provider # A15R655WS (wheel and ST205/75R15 radial tire) but it is not recommended to do this on a permanent basis.

The reason for this is the larger wheel and tire is going to cause your suspension to wear quicker and you can have issues with your trailer tracking unevenly behind your tow vehicle. Due to that I recommend replacing your wheels with the larger ones, assuming you have enough clearance. This is going to cost more now but in the long run it will save you from having to change your suspension components out.

You could change all of your wheels to the # TTW550555WS1 and pair it with a tire like the # AM10303.

I have added a link to a video review of this wheel and tire for you to take a look at.
