Products Featured in This Question
Question:
1500 pounds is the max towing capacity of the CR-V 2017. I wonder if the camping trailer we expect to buy will be too heavy 1500 pounds empty . Is this too fair ? The seller told us that theres nothing to worried about. But how the CVT will reacts on hills etc... The camping trailer is an Ascape CAMPER with 10electronic brakes . Thank you!

Auto makers like Honda get to decide what the towing capacity is for any vehicle they make. This towing capacity is a function of the entire vehicle; its frame, engine, transmission, suspension, cooling system, etc.
The online owner's manual for the 2017 CR-V does state that 1500-lbs is the most a loaded trailer can weigh including the weight of cargo in it. There are no qualifying statements in the manual that say more weight is okay under specific conditions, such as when a weight distribution system like # EQ37041ET is employed or when the trailer itself has brakes, so for this vehicle 1500-lbs is it.
A camping trailer that weighs 1500-lbs empty will probably have a GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) of more like 2000 to 2200-lbs to account for the weight of water, propane, supplies and occupants.
It is possible to reduce some of the thermal stress that comes from towing, by adding transmission, engine oil and power steering coolers, and these vehicle accessories are very worthwhile when towing. But none of these things adds structural strength to the vehicle and that is the concern for your car.
I recommend either a lighter trailer, a heavier-duty tow vehicle or both.
