Should Trailer Wiring Be Stored Inside Vehicle When Not in Use
Updated 04/18/2018 | Published 04/16/2018 >
Question:
I just had Uhaul install a hitch and wiring on my 2016 Kia Sorento. They ran the wiring into the inside of the rear of the vehicle and said that I am to just pull the excess wire and run it under my hatch whenever I tow a trailer....is this correct? Everything I find online shows the wiring running under the vehicle in some manner and not having to run it under the hatch. Thanks.

Unless you are towing all the time it is a good idea to store your 4-pole wiring harness inside the car to protect it from the weather and potential damage. Yes, many folks prefer an external mount and hitches often come with a mounting bracket to affix the connector.
While this is indeed handy, if you are towing only occasionally it is a perfectly good idea to leave the wiring inside the car until needed, and to then pull it out the rear hatch. The rubber molding on the hatch will protect the wiring when the hatch is closed over it.
