Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the tail light assemblies to access this harness.

T-One Connection Location Points Behind Tail Lights

Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery and insert the provided fuse.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Video Transcript for Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness Installation - 2017 Kia Sorento

Speaker 1: Today in our 2017 Kia Sorento, we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the Tekonsha T1 vehicle wiring harness with the four pole flat trailer connector. Part number is 118583.Here's what our wiring harness is going to look like when we pull it out of the packaging. This is the main goal. That's what we want to work. This is going to be a four pole flat trailer connector. It's designed to give you right turn and brake, left turn and brake, running lights and a ground.

Whether you're going to have a trailer or a cargo carrier that you need the lights to work on, this is going to make sure that all works properly. Now to deliver that signal from our vehicle, we've got T connectors. We've got a connector that's going to plug in behind the tail light housing right in between our factory wiring, so we're not cutting or splicing any of our factory wiring. That's going to deliver signals from the driver's side of the vehicle and from the passengers side of the vehicle to our module box. This box is going to take those signals and it's going to convert that into a usable signal for the trailer. The great thing about the module box is that this uses a stand alone 12 volt power source, so you're not going to have to worry about overloading the vehicles wiring system.

It also isolates the trailer side here from the car side. Oftentimes with trailers you'll see shorts and things like that. This is going to prevent those shorts from going back into our vehicle and causing any kind of electrical damage there.Tekonsha does a great job on these boxes. I think they're one of the more sturdy boxes that are out. They use a rubberized epoxy potting material here in the bottom.

Your circuit is going to sit inside there and then they fill around it. This is going to help to absorb shock or anything like that as we travel down the road. You're not going to get that with other wiring manufacturers. We talked about the 12 volt power. We're going to run that right up to the battery. We'll use the wire provided and the fuse holder.

We're also going to have ring terminal, self tapping screw, the fuse, you can see some zip ties, some double stick tape to try to help us get everything installed. The only thing I would really change is, when running this power wire forward, the connection at the fuse holder underneath the hood is going to be outside of the vehicle. Instead of using a standard butt connector like what they've provided, it's a good idea to upgrade to part number DW05745. This is a head shrink butt connector. It's going to do the exact same thing as this butt connector, although we can warm this up and that's going to shrink down around our wire. It's going to give us a waterproof connection point.WE need to get the tail lights removed. We're here on the driver's side. You'll see this small panel. There's a couple little areas there where you can pry out on it. Use a trim panel tool, maybe a flat head screwdriver and just pop that out of the way. Right behind that, we've got two nuts here to remove. We need a 10 millimeter socket. Be careful not to drop those behind that panel. It'd be pretty hard to get to. Now we'll gently pull rearward on our light here. We're trying to separate the two little push fasteners that fit in those two holes. Once you have those separated, push that little tab, and it'll allow you to unplug your wiring harness. Now we'll go to the passengers side and do the same thing there. Now here on the driver's side, we're going to start installing the wiring kit. We've got our red green plug that's going to go right between the body and the rear bumper cover. Do the same thing for our four pole plug. We'll also unwrap the bolt 12 gauge wire that we have. Want to put it down that direction. The other end we're going to connect to the black wire coming from the module box. Strip the wire coming out of the box a little bit, and they're bulk wire. Slide on one of the heat shrink butt connectors we talked about, get that crimped down. We'll use a heat source to shrink that. You can use a mini torch, use a heat gun or a lighter. Now just make sure as you shrink these down that you don't overheat them. Just going to do a little bit at a time. When it's fully shrank it's going to look like that wire is almost magnified a little bit. You'll also have a little bit of clear gel that comes out of the end.Now that we've got that connection made, we're also going to slide our box right down and through so we can get to it from down underneath there. You want to keep your yellow and brown wire up here. The rest of them can all go down behind our bumper cover. We're going to use a little bit of dielectric grease for these connections just because we don't want any moisture getting in there. Eventually dust gets in there. It causes corrosion, so give you the grease to put in there. Want to make sure we don't have any issues down the road. Now to access everything, we want to remove this plastic panel here if yours has one. We've got one, two, three, four, and right up here on the front edge we've got a fifth push pin fastener. Now to remove these, just going to pop the center out. You'll see the rest of it will pull right out. You've also got two pressure nuts, nuts that you just slide this cover up on. One is in this little recess, one is in this recess. Typically, you just pull down. Those will come off. You're right back in this corner, start to see the wires that we need. We're just going to pull the slack out of these. You can see all of our slack is down out. Just left with our T connector there. Little bit more dielectric grease here will help. Then we're just going to reinstall the tail light housing. You line up these two tabs with those two holes, push in and then put our nuts back on.Before you climb back under the vehicle and start running everything where we need it, it's a good to take, I'm going to use airline tubing, but you can use a coat hanger, a stiff piece of wire, really anything you've got, and we're going to put it down through that gap where we sent all of that wiring through. This will allow us to more easily pull up that green and red wire over here to make our connection. Then we can just pull on that. That'll draw it up where we need to connect it.Now we're going to take the red and green wire and our four pole wire, we're going to start working in behind. See there's a few tabs like this one right here that stick down, so we're going to run our wiring in behind there. That'll keep it up and secure so we won't have to worry about it hanging down. We've got a little bit of tape there. Tape that plug right off to that tubing or wire, whatever you decided to use and we're going to draw that up, make our connection behind the passenger side tail light. Now we want to find a good location to mount our box. It looks like we can actually go right up here kind of just like that. Just right on the top of that bumper cover. That'll give us enough room with our ground wire to come over here. Now we're going to clean off the back of our module box and also the surface we're going to mount to so our double sided foam tape will stick properly. To clean this off, we just use a little bit of rubbing alcohol. If you decide on a different spot, just make sure it's a flat surface so it has a good chance to stick. Now we'll use the provide self tapping screw. We're just going to pre-drill a hole right up here on the steel so we can mount our ground. You'll need a quarter inch bit driver or socket for the head of that self tapper. Then we'll place that through our ring terminal and resecure it. We want this to be tight enough so we can't move the ring terminal. Now any excess that you have in your wiring, now would be a good opportunity to use a couple of the zip ties and get that zip tied up and out of the way. We just don't want it to ever come hanging down below the vehicle. Now it's time to decide how much four pole that we want hanging out to make connection with our trailer. Then to keep it up, I like to just use the cover, connect it to our hitch there. Now any excess that you have, just zip tie that up and out of the way.The last thing we're going to do is run our power wire up toward the front of the vehicle. This is going to connect to our battery. I'm going to start by zip tying it off pretty lightly. Right over here in the corner there's a hole right behind where your hitch will be. You can route your wire however you'd like to do it. You just need to avoid any sharp edges, any pinch points or anything else that might cause damage to it. I'm going to come right up here by that body mount. Now we're going to run forward underneath the panel here. See we just kind of came up over the filler neck here, zip tied off to the parking brake cable. A lot of times, we can gain access just by removing these couple of hand nuts. If necessary, you'll also use a 10 millimeter. You can drop those down.Once we come out of the front of the cover, we're going to go right up over this. You'll see your brake line is right here. We want to follow those up. We can see our air box right there. Zip tie it off up here as high as you can reach on these brake lines. We should be able to find it from up top. Pull it on through. Now we just want to reach down, it should be in this wire where you find your wire. We'll pull out our slack. I like to keep it as hidden as possible. We've got two power sources we can use. We see underneath our battery here we've got a couple of studs that we could use to connect our ring terminal to once it goes through our fuse holder. Instead of compromising this cover, it can be a little difficult to get in there and work, we're going to go over to the power distribution center. You've got a tab on the back, pull in, front, you pull in and then just lift it straight up. That's going to give us access to this stud right here. We should be able to bring our fuse holder up, zip tie it off with this wire so it kind of keeps everything close and compact, and we'll store our fuse holder down below. To get there, I'm going to bring my wire kind of back around the back side of the air box here. Of course, you want that to be down low enough so it's not going to interfere with standard maintenance of the filter, anything like that. I'm going to start with one zip tie down lower on the cable here. We're doing this just to prevent any of our wiring from ever going down below the vehicle. Get your slack pulled out of it and then just cinch that down. Then we'll the excess off here. We want to leave a little bit of slick just in case we maybe mess up our connection or we need to change it down the road. We're going to strip that back, then we'll add on another one of our heat shrink butt connectors. Then we're going to cut our fuse holder kind of in there in the middle. The side that I'm going to use to run up to my stud, I'm going to leave that just a little bit longer. Strip both ends of that back. Shorter side is going to go to our butt connector there. We'll crimp it down and then we can get that shrank. The ring terminal that comes with the kit is just a little bit larger than what I'd like to go underneath that stud, so we're going to use part number 44-5356A. It's going to be a 5/16 inch ring terminal, 10 to 12 gauge in size. That will crimp on the other side here. Now using a 10 millimeter socket we can take the nut off of our stud, place that ring terminal over it and then resecure it with the nut. Zip tie it around the back of that cable. Now we'll take the provided 15 amp fuse. We'll place that in the fuse holder, put our cap over the top there and then a couple zip ties. We can get excess we have here tidied up and out of the way. Since we've zip tied that right down with that cable, we should get our cover to slide right back in position and click closed just like that. Now we'll get our cover popped back up into position. I just like to line up those nuts in the top, push it up, then we'll just get our fasteners put in to get that one we've got right up here inaudible 00:12:51.I'm going to test our wiring out. We're just going to use a simple four pole tester. Part number is I26. Just plug it in. As we go through the lights, you'll see the LEDs come on accordingly. We'll start by turning our headlights, and our left turn signal, our right turn signal and our brakes. Now with everything working properly, that's going to complete our installation of the Tekonsha T1 vehicle wiring harness with the four pole flat trailer connector, part number 118583 on our 2017 Kia Sorento.

Pay the few extra dollars to get this product over the lower cost models if you have a 2014 Kia Sorento. It will last longer (instead of a few months) and work more reliably. I tried this one due to the higher amperage specs over the lower cost models: Stop/turn lights: 4.2 amps per circuit Tail lights: 7.5 amps per circuit 505505

Helen M. was extremely helpful knowing which hitch to pick for my vehicle. She was also aware that my 2017 Sorento came wired from the factory and knew where to tell me to look for them. The wiring was where she said it would be and that saved me a lot of time and additional cost. The hitch itself is as advertised and a good value for the price. Simple install. Ask the Experts about this Tekonsha Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring

  • How Long Would Tekonsha Trailer Wiring Harness Take to Install on 2020 Kia Sorento
I'd set aside an afternoon to install the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118583 that you referenced on your 2020 Kia Sorento. It's a pretty simple install but routing the power wire up to the front of the vehicle might take a little extra time. I attached an install video for you to check out to this page that will walk you through the process as well as give you an idea how long it would take. It's a pretty easy install though so I don't think you'd have any issues.

  • How to Determine if 2017 Kia Sorento Has Tow Package to Pick Out Trailer Wiring
The simplest and most reliable way to determine if your 2017 Kia Sorento came with the tow package would be to contact a Kia dealer and give them your VIN and they'll be able to tell. Or if you still have the original window sticker it would be listed there too. The Tekonsha kit part # 118269 fits if you have the tow package and the # 118583 is correct for if you do not have the tow package. Also worth noting is that the part # 118583 will fit either variation of the vehicle due to...

The T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness part # 118583 is a plug and play kit whereas the Curt Powered Tail Light Converter part # C59236 would require you to splice into wires on the vehicle which I do not recommend. They would function the same but installation is very different. The T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness is absolutely what I recommend you use on your 2019 Kia Sorento. In regards to the 7-Way RV and 4-Way Flat Adapter part # ETBC7 and Adapter 4-Pole to 7-Pole and 4-Pole part # 37185,...

Absolutely, you can check just behind the rear tire on the driver's side of your 2019 Kia Sorento, on the outside of the frame rail. The factory connector, if present, will look like the one in the attached photo (B). Note that you will need to remove a protective cover to gain access to the Sorento's wiring harness (C). • Should Trailer Wiring Be Stored Inside Vehicle When Not in Use
Unless you are towing all the time it is a good idea to store your 4-pole wiring harness inside the car to protect it from the weather and potential damage. Yes, many folks prefer an external mount and hitches often come with a mounting bracket to affix the connector. While this is indeed handy, if you are towing only occasionally it is a perfectly good idea to leave the wiring inside the car until needed, and to then pull it out the rear hatch. The rubber molding on the hatch will protect...

In order to install a 7 way connector on your 2019 Kia Sorento, you'll need to first install the Tekonsha T-One Wiring Harness # 118583 . This gives you a 4 way connection by T'ing into the rear lights on the back of your Kia Sorento and providing you with the starting point for a 7 way connector (there is an installation video attached to this answer that will walk you through this). From here, you'll need to install the # ETBC7 which provides you with a fully functioning 7 way connector...

All of the 4-pole trailer wiring harness kits we offer for the 2014 Kia Sorento, shown on the linked page, are the powered converter type. This means that a secondary 12V power connection for the harness is made directly to the vehicle battery, which provides the actual power to illuminate the trailer lights. This harness type does isolate the car's wiring from any potential faults or shorts on the trailer. The specific powered harness you need depends on how the car was equipped from...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and 7-Way Wiring for 2017 Kia Sorento
For your 2017 Kia Sorento, I recommend the trailer hitch # e98843. This will give you an extremely strong hitch to start your towing package. You will also need a ball mount, pin and clip, and wiring as you stated. For your desired wiring, I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118583 and then adding the Adapter Kit # ETBC7. This will allow you to have all the functions needed for your 7-way. It also comes with everything you need to add...

  • Curt Echo vs Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller for 2019 Kia Sorento
The Curt Echo # C51180 and the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 # 90885 that you're deciding between are both excellent proportional brake controllers but as you mentioned, their installation, operation, and physical design are all quite a bit different. Between the two options I recommend going with the Curt Echo # C51180 for your application because it will offer an easier installation process and its convenient operation is simply better fitted for occasional towing like you plan on doing. Once...

  • Recommended 7-Way Wiring on 2019 Kia Sorento for Travel Trailer Connection
If your 2019 Kia Sorento has the factory tow package then I recommend starting with the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package - 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118269 which will connect to the wiring harness located along the frame rail at the rear of your vehicle. If you don't have the factory tow package then I recommend the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118583 which connects behind your tail lights and draws power directly...

  • How to Determine if 2016 Kia Sorento Has Factory Tow Prep Package
The elements that comprise a factory tow package vary greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer and even between different model vehicles of the same manufacturer. Based on my research, it looks like the tow package for your 2016 Kia Sorento would simply feature a larger cooler and pre wiring for a trailer connector. To determine if your vehicle has the factory tow package, I recommend visiting your local Kia dealer with your VIN. They will then be able to tell you exactly what was installed...

  • Hitch, Wiring and Brake Controller for 2018 Kia Sorento 3.3L V6 AWD
Certainly a vehicle with a 3.3L V6 engine is typically a better choice for towing than one with an engine having half that displacement. Still, the 1.5L Ford does carry a 2000-lb maximum trailer weight rating, enough for a small pop-up or teardrop. But the 5000-lb-towing rated Kia is definitely the better option, not just for its power but also since it is heavier and is an all-wheel-drive vehicle that should provide a more stable towing experience. For the Kia we have 2-inch Class III...

  • How to Tell if a 2019 Kia Sorento has a Tow Package
There is a panel just under and behind your driver's side wheel well that you can remove to determine if you have the tow package or not. If you check out the attached picture you can see what wiring will be in this location for the tow package once the panel is removed. If you have this wiring then I recommend using the T-One # 118269 but if you don't then I recommend the T-One # 118583. I really like the Tekonsha wiring kits because they have proven to be the most reliable brand that...

  • Trailer Hitch Fit Recommendation for 2019 Kia Sorento
We do have a Draw Tite hitch that is confirmed as a fit for your 2019 Kia Sorento. For that you'd want the Draw Tite hitch part # 75908 which is a Class III hitch with plenty of capacity and would work well. I attached an install video for this hitch for you to check out as well. For trailer wiring we then have the Tekonsha kit part # 118583 which is a confirmed fit and will work well too. This is a custom install kit too. If you wanted to do some towing you might be interested in etrailer...

  • Recommended Class III Trailer Hitch for 2016 Kia Sorento With V6 Engine
For your 2016 Kia Sorento with a V6 engine I recommend the Draw-Tite # 75908 trailer hitch. This is a Class III hitch with a 2" receiver and is bolt-on installation so no drilling into your Sorento's frame will be required; I like this hitch over the option from Curt because the Draw-Tite does not require the use of stabilizing straps for non-trailer loads such as bike racks the way the Curt hitch does. The Draw-Tite has a 5,000 lb towing capacity and 500 lb tongue weight capacity though...

  • Comparing Curt # 13195 and Draw-Tite # 75908 for 2017 Kia Sorento
The Draw-Tite # 75908 is more hidden with the recessed aspect of the hitch pin hole being 5-1/2 inches from the outermost part of the bumper. The height is 15-1/2 inches from the inside top of the receiver to the ground. The Curt # C13195 is very similar in style and has a hitch pin hole that is 4-1/2 inches from the outermost part of the bumper so it is 1 inch closer to the outside of the bumper. The hitch does sit closer to the ground with the top inside of the receiver 13-1/2...

  • Best Class III Trailer Hitch for 2019 Kia Sorento LX with V6 Engine
For your 2019 Kia Sorento LX with the V6 engine, I recommend the etrailer.com Trailer Hitch Receiver # e98843 because it offers a 5,000 lb towing capacity and a tongue weight rating of 750 lbs. The matte black finish on the etrailer hitch is a nice touch that sets it apart from its competitors. Since you'll just be using the hitch to move your daughter to college, it won't play a huge part for now, however, the higher tongue weight capacity will allow you to use the hitch for a wide...

  • How Does Curt Echo Mobile Wireless Brake Controller Work and Why is it The Easiest Solution
The Echo # C51180 is a unique and really awesome brake controller solution. Basically it's a self contained brake controller that installs inline with the 7-way wiring of your vehicle at the rear of it. So the only wiring needed is a 7-way with all of the turn signals active and a wire for the 12 volt accessory circuit ran up to the battery. We have the # ETBC7L specifically for your application after you install a 4-way # 118583 you'd be set with parts needed to install. So the Echo draws...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch and Wiring for 2019 Kia Sorento to Utilize Wireless Brake Controller
For your 2019 Kia Sorento, I recommend you start with the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118583 and then add the 7-way adapter # 37185. You will then attach the white wire with the ring terminal to a bare metal ground on your vehicle frame and then use wiring # 10-1-1 to run the 12V wire (black on the adapter) to circuit breaker # 9510 and then to the positive terminal on your vehicle battery. You will not need to connect the blue or purple wire on the...

  • How to Determine if 2019 Kia Sorento Had Tow Package for Trailer Wiring
Since your 2019 Kia Sorento is brand new you probably have the window sticker still. On the window sticker it will be listed whether you have the tow package or not. Or you can contact a Kia dealer and give them your VIN and they'll be able to tell you. If you do have it the trailer wiring you'd want is the part # 118269 which installs easily. Or if you do not have it the part # 118583 is what you'd need. This actually fits whether you have the package or not due to how it installs.

  • Wiring 2016 Kia Sorento to use Curt Echo Trailer Brake Controller
The Curt Echo Trailer Brake Controller # C51180 will not actually require you use that kit for installation. What you would need to start with on your 2016 Kia Sorento instead is a 4-way connector (if you don't have one), either the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118583 if your '16 Sorento does NOT have the factory tow package or the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118269 if your Sorento DOES have the factory tow package. The install will be different depending on which harness you need...

  • Will EcoHitch Trailer Hitch Fit a 2016 Kia Sorento with Full Size Spare
I spoke with my contact at EcoHtch and they said that since they only test fit the trailer hitch # 306-X7320 with the OEM spare tire (donut) they wouldn't be able to confirm if it will fit the larger tire that you have. The other trailer hitches, like the etrailer.com # E98843, have more of a width issue but since the EcoHitch has a higher crossmember I believe that the larger diameter of your spare will be an issue. If you like the hidden look of the EcoHitch and you still have your...

  • Trailer Wiring for 2019 Kia Sorento
If your 2019 Kia Sorento has the factory tow package I recommend Tekonsha part # 118269. It has a higher amp draw than the other harnesses available. There's a connector near the rear of your Kia along the frame rail on the driver's side the harness plugs into. There is also a plastic panel in the way that you need to remove but it comes off pretty easily. I've linked an install video on a 2018 which is the same process. You can see the installer remove the panel and show where the...

  • Trailer Wiring Recommendations for 2019 Kia Sorento
For your 2019 Kia Sorento there are two trailer wiring options I recommend. The T-One kit part # 118269 for if you do have the tow package (does not require running wire to battery) or the part # 118583 which is the correct kit for if you do not have the trailer package. This does require running a wire to battery so that your trailer wiring is powered by the battery and not the delicate vehicle wiring. If your Kia Sorento has a trailer hitch you most likely have the tow package. Since...
