What is the Speed Rating for ST225/75R15 Tire with Load Range D
Updated 03/31/2020 | Published 03/27/2018 >
Question:
I would like to know if a D rated tire speed is 65 mph. A E rated tire at 80 mph. At 65 mph for a D rated tire I can not go faster than 65 to keep up with traffic on interstate roads? I am in no hurry, but we just came back to Ohio from Cal. as snow birds and everyone was passing me, I felt that I was an obstruction on the roads! SGS28 Cougar Light tires are 225*15 D rated tires with speed rating on tires of 65mph

Helpful Expert Reply:
Most trailer tires do have a maximum speed rating of 65 mph unless otherwise indicated on the tire. I do not recommend exceeding a trailer tire's speed limit because this can lead to excessive heat on the tire, which is the most common cause for failure.
The speed rating is not really related to its Load Range but simply specific to the particular model tire you are looking at (not all Load Range D tires have the same speed rating). For example, we do actually have the Provider ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire # TTWTRTM2257515D that features a Load Range D but has a maximum speed rating of 81 mph. If you are wanting to go a bit faster on those interstates, this tire will work great as a replacement on your Cougar Light Trailer. The tire itself has a maximum load of 2,540 pounds at 65 psi and comes with a 2-year limited warranty.
I have attached a short video demonstration on this tire that you can look at, along with a couple of articles on trailer tires and wheels that you might also find helpful.
