No, you can mount a recessed D-ring in any orientation you need and it will perform the same and have the same rating. I recommend # RR5K because it comes with a backing plate and hardware. It is rated for 5,000 pounds limited to the capacity of the surface it is attached to. I have linked a video showing an example installation for you.
