Choosing Radial or Bias Ply Tires for Jayco 226 Travel Trailer
Question:
If you were replacing 4+1 spare, would you buy Loadstar ST185/80D13 or R13s? My 2010 Jayco 226 came with Duro ST185/80D13 Load 1460 @65psi. Sidewalls cracked 2yrs from in-service date. Thanks.

In the ST185/80-13 tire size, we only have a bias ply tire available, part # AM1ST79. If you were wanting a radial, you would need to go with size ST175/80R-13. We have that size in load range D with a 1610 lb capacity at 65 psi, part # AM10210 or in load range C with a 1360 lb capacity at 50 psi, part # AM10199.
The dimensional difference between the ST175/80-13 and the ST175/80-13 is minimal. The 175 will be .2 of an inch narrower and .3 of an inch smaller in diameter.
If the choice is available, I would always choose a radial tire over bias ply. A radial tire would run cooler, and cooler tires lead to longer life. It is also very important that you do not overload your tires and keep them inflated to the maximum psi as shown on the tire sidewall. The price differential is pretty negligible.
Protecting your trailer tires from direct sunlight when the trailer is stored is very important to prevent the cracking you describe.
