Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

  • Tire Recommendation for a Trailer Used on Paved and Dirt Roads Size 175/80-13
The best tire for your trailer will really depend on how much time you spend on paved roads versus dirt or gravel roads. At the 175/80-13 tire size, you can choose between a radial tire and a bias ply tire. Radial tires, like part # AM10210, have more flex, better ground contact, traction, tread wear and runs cooler than a bias ply tire. A bias ply tire, like part # AM1ST77 has a thicker sidewall and is ideal for off-road use, but if you spend more time traveling on paved roads, a radial...

  • Can 1973 Travel Mate Camper Use ST175/80D13 Tires
The ST175/80D13 tire you added shouldn't be a problem. It will be slightly larger in width by about 1/4" and diameter by about 1/2" but that is unlikely to cause clearance issues. However, if you want to keep running that tire on there you should match it with the same size on the other side. The only thing I would personally do differently is switch to radial tires like the # AM10199. These are a lot better for most purposes, especially on the road, and will last longer.

  • Recommended Replacement Tire for B78-13 ST tires on Starcraft Pop-Up
The B78-13 ST tire size translates to a ST175/80-13 size tire. The overall height of the ST175/80/13 tire is 24 inches and the overall width is approximately 7 inches. A comparable tire would be the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range C # AM10199, which is 24.1" tall and 7" wide. These would be a good replacement tire for your Starcraft pop-up camper.

  • 13" Trailer Wheel and Tire That is Compatible with the Americana Baby Moon Trailer Wheel Center Cap
It looks like we currently only have 1 tire/wheel combo in the 13" size that is compatible with the Americana Baby Moon Trailer Wheel Center Cap # AM90086. That is the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Black Wheel # AM31241, but this has a load range D tire which is actually rated higher than C. If you do not like that style and prefer the Dexstar Conventional Steel Wheel # AM20212, you can use that and add the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10199 which is load...

  • Choosing Between 13" 4-Lug Radial and Bias Ply Trailer Tires
If the majority of the towing will be done on flat, level pavement at highway speeds then the best option is a trailer tire with radial ply's as they will last longer and run much cooler when compared to bias ply tires which are more designed for slow speed backroads or off-roading. It sounds like most of your driving will indeed be flat highway roads so I recommend going with a radial ply tire like the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire part # AM10199 which has a load rating up to...

  • Bias Versus Radial Trailer Tires for a Pop Up Camper
The Loadstar ST175/80D13 trailer tire, # AM1ST76, is a good tire for a pop up camper. But if you will be towing the trailer often or over long distances, a radial tire, # AM10199, would be a better choice. Radial tires track better and offers more contact with the ground. More ground contact improves traction and will provide better tread wear. Radial tires are also have more stability than a bias ply tire. Radials also run cooler if they are not overloaded. This helps the tire last...

  • Baby Moon Hubcaps For a 1976 Scamp 13’ Camper With 175/80-13 Wheels and Tires
I cannot find any baby moon hub caps for your 13" wheels. The ones that I do see, the wheels have 3 bump outs on the wheel themselves that I do not see on your wheel. These bump outs are needed to hold the baby moon hub cap in place. You can see them on the Dexstar Conventional Steel Wheel # AM20214. They also specify that the Baby Moon Trailer Wheel Center Cap # AM90086 will only work on a 5 lug wheel and I do not see one for a 4-lug option so this may be something that is not built...

  • Replacing 155/80R13 Tires on Travel Trailer With Larger Tires
It's not dumb at all and you can gain a bit of height by replacing your 155/80R13 trailer tires with taller ones. Your current tires are 22.8 inches in diameter and you can bump that up to 24.1 inch diameter tires with the following: - Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10199 These are going to give you a little more than half an inch of clearance, which isn't a huge mount, but still an improvement. These tires fit 13" x 4-1/2", 13" x 5", and 13" x 5-1/2" wheels.

  • Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10210 Recommendation for a B78x13ST Sized Tire
I spoke with our in-house tire expert. Your best bet would be a 175-80. I attached a link to a page that has all of the tires that we sell that are the correct size. I would recommend the Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire, part # AM10210. As this has the highest load range and is a radial tire. Because of the construction of a radial tire, the tire has more flex and will allow for more ground contact. That will improve traction and better treadwear. It also gives the radial tire...

  • Best Replacement for a ST155/80-R13 Trailer Tire
The 155/80-13 tire you are referring to is a very odd size which is why you are having such difficulty finding a replacement. We do not carry a tire in this size but I do still have an option for you. A 155/80-13 tire is going to be 22.8" in diameter x 6.1" wide. A 175/80-13 tire is going to be 24" in diameter x 6.9" wide. Therefore, the new tire size will be 1.2" taller and .8" wider than the old tire. This means that you will need an additional .6" of space between the tire and fender....

  • How to Choose the Correct Tires and Wheels for a Motorcycle Trailer
As a general rule when choosing tires for your trailer, you should choose tires that have a weight capacity that is greater than or equal to the weight capacity of the axle. If you have a 2,000 lb axle, then you will want to choose two tires that each have a weight capacity of 1,000 lbs or more. Keep in mind, adding tires and wheels with a higher weight capacity does not increase the weight capacity of your axle. For your motorcycle trailer, you should be okay with load range C tires...

Are you sure about the 165/80-13 tire size? I don't show that as a currently available tire size, could you have meant a 185/80-13? In any event, a 175/80-13 tire measures 24 inches tall x 6.9 inches wide which would be slightly shorter at about 3/4 of an inch and roughly 1/2 inch narrower than your existing tires, assuming that they're a 185/80-13. So, the tires should work fine for you, once again assuming your current size is 185/80-13. I'd recommend going with a radial tire, as they...

  • Modern Replacement for A78-13 Trailer Tire Size
The A78-13 is an old numbering system for tires that isn't used any longer. The compatible modern tire size is 175/80-13. The # AM3S030 bias tire you'd looked at would work fine, but I'd recommend going with a radial tire in that size, because you'll get better ride quality and radial tires do a better job shedding heat than bias-ply tires do. Given that the priced differential between bias ply and radial tires is just a few dollars, it makes sense for most folks to go with the better...

  • Difference Between 175/80-13 Radial & Bias Trailer Tires
The difference between radial and bias 175/80-13 trailer tires doesn't have to do with resistance, it is really just the application of the tires. Bias tires are really only best for agricultural use while radial tires are best for normal, everyday roadways. The reason for that is bias tires have cords which run diagonally while radial tires have cords that run from side-to-side. What this does is result in radial tires flexing more, running cooler (which means they do last longer), and...

  • 175/80-13 Trailer Tire Recommendation for Yacht Club Boat Trailer
As long as the tire has the weight capacity needed for the trailer setup there isn't a distinct advantage to bump up to a higher Load Range. The only significant difference will be that the tire will need to be inflated to a higher psi rating. With that said you current tire size indicates you have a bias ply tire which you can improve upon with a radial like the part # AM10199. Radials have a more flexible sidewall which creates less heat when on the highway and also adds quite a bit...

We can help you out here, and you are right that the "R" stands for radial and the "D" for bias tires. The difference is bias tires have a stiffer sidewall than radial tires, so radials flex more and run cooler.
