Powering Reverse Lights on Pop-Up Camper with 6-Way Trailer Connector

Question:

Ive just received and installed the brake controller and 6 way wiring adaptor on my 2001 F150 for towing a little pop up and Im ready to order the hitch - but - Im thinking about back up lights and, if I can figure this out, Id like to order them at the same time as the hitch for shipping cost. The center pin on the 6 way is hot - 12V back to the trailer. I havent traced it yet on the trailer to see where that hot wire goes but Im thinking about putting a switch in the line where I can get to it on the trailer to just switch on the back up lights when I need them for getting down my steep, curvy, narrow driveway at night. I know theres probably a way to do this the right way through the trucks wiring so the back up lights work with the trucks, but maybe not with a 6 way? Id appreciate your comments on this. I dont mind if the system is a little awkward and unique as it will only be used occasionally. Thanks, Ed

The idea you propose, using a switch to power your reverse lights using the 12-volt accessory circuit off of your 6-way trailer connector would most likely work. I would first recommend you find out where that 12-volt circuit terminates on the trailer. Some pop-up campers have a battery for interior lights. The 12-volt accessory circuit keeps that battery maintained.

Had you not already purchased the OEM 6-way replacement connector, I would have recommended going with the 7-way replacement, part # 118242 and installing a 7-way connector on the pop-up. The extra circuit on the trailer side of the connection would be ran to the reverse lights on the trailer.

If you do not already have reverse lights installed, you can view our selection by clicking on the provided link.
We also offer 16 gauge wire by the foot, part # DW02359-1.

Since the setup you propose will only be used occasionally, I do not see a problem with it. (Just do not forget to turn off the switch once you get out of the driveway!)
