If your 2001 Dodge Dakota is equipped with a factory-installed 7-way connector then the Hopkins wiring harness # HM42190 that you referenced will be a direct plug-in installation with no cutting or splicing of wires needed.
I have linked a photo of the rectangular OEM-style connector that will mate with the one on your truck IF it has the tow package. You should be able to locate this OEM connector above the rear bumper if it is present.
If you do NOT have the tow package in your Dakota then in order to have a 7-Way you'll first need to install a 4-pole harness # 118329. An installation video is linked for you.
If you need 12V trailer power and a trailer brake circuit on the 7-Way you'll then use our # ETBC7 kit to convert the 4-pole to a 7-Way. If you only need the 4-pole's lighting signals, but in a 7-way format, then instead you'll just need the 7-Way adapter # 37185 which plugs right into the 4-pole.
