An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

My 2004 Dodge 3/4 ton was squatting in the rear and handled okay with my camper on it, but I thought there was room for improvement. My clearance between the rear axle and frame of the truck was about 3-1/4 inches when loaded, and I could see that the bump stops had been contacting the top of the axle. My clearance when empty is 7-1/2 inches. The kit was shipped quickly and it was time to see if it was "Easy" to install. It WAS easy. Thank you. I decided to put the spacer in to give me Max support in the back with the camper on the truck. This left me less than 1/2 inch space between the axle and new springs when empty. Happy to say my truck rides fine when empty. Did the road test with the camper on and I'm thrilled, no real sway anymore and I have 6-1/4 inches between axle and frame with the 3500 pound camper on the truck. Great product at a great price. I highly recommend this suspension enhancement. Thank you for a great product that solved my nagging problem on curvy roads and high winds. Photos are of new springs next to the bump stops they replace, the installed springs, the springs compressed with the camper on, and finally a picture of my truck sitting really close to level. It would be 4 inches lower in the back with out the new springs.

I have had these installed for a year now and they are great!! Installation was very easy, instructs were clear and easy to follow. I have towed our 5th wheel numerous times and it makes a big difference - the truck handles well and stays level when loaded. No air lines or air pumps to mess with - I don't even know they are there when I am not towing. I would highly recommend these.

I have driven cross country a number of times with my 2003 Dodge Ram 1500 since installing for my 10000GVW gooseneck trailer.
Has leveled my truck when pulling. Only drawback is the ride is a little stiffer when unloaded, but is a small sacrifice

Delivered a day early, easy installation, just what I was after for my 2010 2500,with a leveling kit 63 gal auxiliary tank, generator, tools, and the like in the bed, probably 1000 pounds or so,300 or so behind the center of the rear axel, not so much by choice just the way it had to be ,these got rid of that annoying little squat, much more satisfied with the stance with the tongue weight on it,easy order easy delivery , you can see the before and after, awesome product!!

2012 DodgeRam Pickup

I ordered a pair of rear axle Timbrens for my new Ram 2500 as I plan to buy a 5th wheel and tour the US in my retirement. To me, the Timbrens are preferable to adding air bags or beefing up my leaf springs or shocks since they only "work" when you are loaded allowing you to keep your normal unloaded ride quality when not towing. e trailer's price, service and follow-up was great and I had the Timbrens installed and ready to roll 30 minutes after delivery.

by:

I have a 5th wheel camper with a pin weight of approx 1800 lbs. It made the rear of my 3/4 ton pickup squat more than I thought it would. After much research, I decided to try these. They have excellent ratings everywhere I look. Guys (and gals) rave about them in the towing forums that I frequent. Delivery from etrailer was fast. I was able to install them in about 20 minutes flat. HINT - I sprayed the nuts and bolts that fastened the original bumps stops to the frame several days before expected delivery with PB Blaster to make removal a breeze. These along with some new heavy duty shocks and my truck is towing the 5th wheel level and like a boss.

2004 DodgeRam Pickup

I had watched the installation video so that i would have a idea how they went on well I was supprised I didnt have to raise the truck at all just went under removed bump stops found out that I didnt need the spacer bolted them up to the truck and was finshed in about a half hour. havent hauled anything yet or hooked up to camp trailer so dont know just how they will work but have read good reviews on camp trailer fourms so thought I would give them a try.

by:

These went on my 2005 Dodge Ram 1500 4WD. Passanger side installed smooth but on the driver side I had one bolt twisted off as i was removing the bump stop, and the second bolt had no usable threads. So they both got drilled out and tapped new threads. I installed the timbrens and that left about a 1 inch space to the axle. Went and got my first load of plywood today and they worked great! It only took about 20 sheets of 1/4 inch plywood to get the suspension on the timberns, the ride was pretty good with no sag.

by:
2011 DodgeRam Pickup

I used these on my Ram 2500. They are set to have an inch of clearance with no load. With the 11,000 pound 5th wheel on the truck/trailer combo is level and the ride is stable.

by:

It’s really a great product. I pull for our local High school Band. The Trailers we have are several different size trailers that are inclosed. 16,20,24 foot and 2 open Trailers both 16 footers. Our 20 footer is probably the heaviest one we have because of the Rolling case that is put in side plus the weight of the Trailer. When I put the Rubber shocks on and pulled the trailer for the first time the truck stayed level and it stopped the rocking horse effect that would happen when I went over numbs in the road. When trucks passed me I would get a swaying motion but now it has a little bit of a sway but not to the point it was doing without the Rubber shocks on your Axel.

Good product. Received 1 day earlier than expected. I watched the video before ordering so when I got the product it only took 45 min to install, adjust, and clean up. As always Etrailer had what I wanted when I wanted it and great shipping and cost. I have ordered in the past and will order again.

Just finished installing my Timbren RSE system. Install was easy and went very well. I had both of them in place in 60 minutes. Would have gone faster if the instructions would have been clearer about assembly of the rubber suspension unit to the mounting plate. The pre-tapped bolt hole in the mounting plate is similar to a lock nut and the bolt does not easily turn, even with a half inch drive. You will have to lock the plate into a vice in order to turn the bolt until it locks. There is a lot of resistance but keep turning until the bolt locks up. Other than that, the unit easily replaces the factory bumpers. Took the truck for a test drive and couldn't believe the ride, and this is without the trailer hooked up. Can't wait to hook up the fiver and check out the new suspension.

After a full summer of pulling my 5th wheel trailer I can factually say the ride of my truck dramatically improved! My wife noticed the difference too and commented on how much smoother everything feels. Im also convinced the smoother ride will reduce wear and tear on the springs, shocks and axel. The Timbren RSE should be standard on all trucks. Buy this product and you wont be disappointed.

The Timbren Suspension rubber mounts work great! Easy to install. The system only works when there is a load on the truck. It keeps my in bed camper from rocking. No air bags to fill no compressor to install. Simple system that works.

Good system! Simple and it works for my application! I have an 825 Lance in bed camper and I haul a 19’ Thunderjet boat the overloads reduce any sway and make for a comfortable ride

Holding up well under heavy loads and reduces vehicle rolls around curves and corners. Would buy again for another vehicle. Make sure the other suspension parts are in good repair too. This doesn't replace good having good springs and shocks.

Talked to Cathy T who was very friendly and was able to answer my questions and concerns( went into this being skeptical) Cathy assured me that etrailer was a customer orientated company so decided to take a shot, recieved product 1 day earlier than expected which was a nice surprise,as far as installation it was as advertised took less than 30min and was very easy (tip run bolt on open slotted end (back)most of the way in then slide in it will make it easier to tighten bolt) have not towed 5er to see how they actually work did raise the rear of truck 08 ram2500 td did not end up with any clearance but it does say in instructions that medium and heavy duty trucks will stay in contact feel like they will do the job. Will definitely recommend and make further orders from etrailer thanks

Have you towed yet?

Brian

9/25/2015

Ken have not had a chance to tow 5er on the road yet,I did have to move it in the storage lot from one spot to another and am impressed that my truck stayed level I looked at the timbrens with the 5er hooked up and they were compressed some should have taken pic the tongue weight according to the website is aroond 1800 its a montana 3400rl hope this helps some, will update after towing waiting to mount new tires also bought from etrailer the provider G rated and has an L speed rating tire they are definitely heavy duty trailer tires and just from looking at them and picking up would say they are a good tire after some mileage will be the true test

Product works. Basically these are axle bump stops with compressability . When installing set the gap to about 1.5 inches. Too small of a gap and you will get a stiff bump when the springs flex to close this gap when lightly loaded. Under heavy load the gap is closed and the Timbrens assist the springs. They are fairly stiff and limit both roll and bounce. Not as good as air bags, but much simpler. I found adding an extra leaf in the spring bundle made a best compliment to the Timbrens as the original rear leaf springs on my 07 Ram wer a bit too flexible for a heavy (1000 lbs tongue) weight. This is the simple solution; if you want total control and variable ride settings between heavy and lighter, then air bags with onboard compressor and in cockpit controller are better (at the cost of $$$ and complications) . Also i think the Timbrens are as good or better in heavy loaded "ROLL" as they are both in contact in heavy loaded conditions and quite stiff.

Consider also your rear tire selection when towing heavy (6K+); you should choose "E" rated tires 80 psi max, but run at 50/60 psi lightly loaded. The "E" rated tires will dramatically reduce Sway.

by:

Easy to install. Search for [online] videos for tips and the proper 15mm ratcheting wrench to buy. Reduces rear end sag when loading the 5th wheel from about 2" to about 1" and makes the ride smoother. I did remove the rear wheels to install these. Easier that way.

Hi all, Etrailer has been my go to for about 10 years and their products have always exceeded my expectations.

No different this time. I used these on a 2004 Dodge 1500two wheel drive with a Hemi. I recently purchased a slide in pop-up camper that weighs 1200lbs my may payload is 1700 lbs. Anyway, with the camper in when I hit a bump the vehicle would oscillate or bounce about 5 times before settling. I was going to put in helper springs but figured I'd try these instead.

With the camper off I didn't have to use jacks at all. I first used the rubber bumpers only, and with the camper in, they touched the axle; however, there was no measurable difference in the ride. The gap between the bumper and the axle was just over 1.5" unloaded.

I put the spacers in and the gap was about 1/2" between the axle and the bumper. No noticeable difference unloaded; however, with the camper in there is no more oscillation. Also, there is no sway going around curves.

I just spent a long weekend road-tripping in West Virginia on some pretty narrow rough roads and these things performed brilliantly. I am not sure of their longevity--love them thus far.

Took about an 2 hours to take the old bumpers off and put the new ones on. Pretty basic installation. I am an RN not a mechanic.

2005 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

I have a 2005 Dodge 2500 5.7 hemi. I installed these in less then 30 Min. I pull a 36' camper with a hitch weight of 1820 lbs. Without these my truck sagged about 3 to 3.5", now I only see about a 1.5 to 2" sag. Truck is level while pulling. I can take 55 mile corners without feeling steering wheel fatigue. Keeps everything in sync. Love the way it handles the bumps as well. I will not ever have another truck without these!! love them! My son had his company install these in his Ford work van as he carries a lot of weight as well. He also swears by them.

by:
2012 DodgeRam Pickup

Bought these as a way of reducing the 3" sag I get when dropping the 3000lb 5th wheel hitch in the back of my 2012 Ram 3500 SRW 2WD
Fairly simple job to fit. I am a tall skinny guy so did not need to jack up the truck. Bump stops came off easy. The slots in the Timbren brackets could do with being 1/4" longer, I had the brackets as far forward as they would go and the Timbrens are only just central over the axle. The bolts at the rear of the bracket (the open sloted end) are tricky to get at (need a closed or open ended wrench) and if you have a 5th wheel hitch mounted to the frame close by (like I did) then you have even less room. Tip: Put the rear mounting bolts in first and slide the Timbren bracket in, that way you only have to cinch the bolt up.
Did not need the spacer and have about 3/4" clearance unloaded and do not notice any change in the ride unloaded. Have not yet hooked up the trailer so can't yet comment on how much the sag is reduced.

by:
2012 DodgeRam Pickup

Put these on my 2012 Ram 2500. With the spacer, they sit off the axle about 1/2". Ride empty is unchanged, which is 3/4 ton stiff. These really help when loading up the bed with heavy loads, or when my gooseneck tongue might be a little overloaded. Go on very easy. I saved the original pads ( which are 4" above the axle) so when I sell/trade in my truck, I will retrieve these to use on my newer one. Highly recommend.

by:
2003 DodgeRam Pickup

I put these on a 2003 Ram 2500 4x4 to take the sag out of the rear and smooth out the ride towing my new 5th wheel toy hauler. The Timbrens did just that, made for a lot nicer towing experience. Leveled the truck and took the bounce out. When I'm not towing with only one inch clearence between the Timbrens and the axle you can tell they are there on the rougher roads but most of the time you won't notice any ride difference. etrailer was great, and fast shipping.

2012 DodgeRam Pickup

After receiving item in mail all pieces were in the Box. I am by no means mechanically inclined and usually have a lot of problems but had these installed On my 2012 Dodge ram in about 35 minutes. Before hooking up to my 5th wheel RV measured 40 and a 1/2 inches from ground to top a will well in the rear and 38 and a 1/2 inches from ground to top will well in the front. After dropping 5th wheel on to truck remeasured and had 40" in the rear and the front remained the same. Ride was excellent and no bounce. Very very good product and I am very pleased with going with these instead of airbags. Would recommend them to anybody.

  • Recommended Rear Suspension Enhancement for my 2006 Dodge Ram Pickup
Thanks for providing pictures! The part you referenced, # SSC-22, will fit your 2006 Dodge Ram Pickup 2500 or 3500 but not a 1500. These are heavy-duty coil springs and will replace your OEM coil springs for better suspension support. Since you will be pulling an RV camper, I would recommend the Timbren rear vehicle suspension # TDR2500CA. It will work with 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 2WD & 4WD. Because the Dodge Ram pickup handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along...

Using the Timbren rear suspension enhancement system on your 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 would definitely be safe and would be a good idea to help the suspension of your truck perform better and last longer. Since you have a 4 inch lift most likely you have a suspension lift and you would need a total of 8 of the part # A25723-90AH00 to make up for the additional space. These are 1 inch spacers and you would need 4 for each side. You would need to provide a longer bolt too as we don't carry that. If your lift is a body lift instead then no...

  • Quarter Inch Play in Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System
I spoke with my contact at Timbren and he said more than likely you have not tightened the bolts all the way. He said you are probably hitting the locking mechanism of the lock nut, so you will want to keep tightening the bolts until the gap is reduced to zero.

  • Timbren Springs and Firestone Ride-Rite Comparison for a 2013 Ram 2500 Towing a 5th Wheel Trailer
There are a few things to consider when purchasing suspension enhancement for towing a fifth wheel trailer. The Bilstein shocks will certainly help, but it also does not hurt to add suspension enhancement like Timbren springs or Firestone air bags either. They will reduce sag, improve stability and prolong the life of your stock suspension. Timbren and Firestone make excellent products. We use Timbren springs on our Ram 2500 when towing our fifth wheel trailer and they do an excellent...

  • Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch and Suspension Enhancement for a 2012 Dodge Ram SLT Crew Cab Short Bed
For a 5th wheel hitch I recommend going with a 16K Reese round tube slider, # RP30075. The round tube slider offers the most travel, 12 inches, for more clearance when making tight turns. For an installation kit, you can use # RP30035-186. The Firestone air spring system, # F2299, that you referenced installs on the bottom and inside of the frame rails, so there should be no interference issues with a 5th wheel installation kit. I have included a link to the installation instructions for...

  • Which Timbren Rear Kit the 6k OR 8k for my 2011 Ram 2500 Mega Cab Towing 10-14k lbs.?
In your case I really like the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System part # T94VR these have the 8K capacity which will help to take a lot of the stress and strain off of that rear suspension set up. Towing 10-14k can cause wear issues relatively quickly and these will do a great job reducing that drastically for you. If you were in the 5-10k or lower towing range I would lean to the lighter versions part # TDR2500CA these also do a great job of taking the abuse so the suspension...

  • Recommendations to Improve Towing Experience with 2003 Ram
It sounds like your truck is pretty well equipped to handle you and your wife's upcoming adventures. To enhance your towing experience and ensure your 2003 Ram has as much fun as you I recommend starting with an aftermarket transmission cooler. This is a great idea especially on an older truck like yours to not only prolong the life of the transmission but also improve its overall performance when it's pulling a heavy load. The Derale Series 8000 # D13503 is a great option that uses 3/4...
