When connecting in series to create 12 volts, should all the wires be the same guage?

Yes, it is advisable to use the same wire gauge for all connections when wiring two batteries in series to provide increased voltage. This same idea also applies to a lesser degree when wiring multiple batteries in parallel to increase amp-hour capacity (with the same voltage).
