Is it Possible to Tow a Fifth Wheel Using a Flat Bed Cab and Chassis Truck

Published 11/01/2014

Question:

Good day, I am looking at several variations of chassis cabs for Ford F450s. There is a style that has a flatbed attatched to the back and, then, there is a style that is nothing but the forward cab and the frame is exposed in the rear. I am wondering if either of these are able to have 5th wheel hitches attatched to them, or if thats something that would take a great deal of work to do.

You could certainly attach a fifth wheel hitch. Usually, you'll see them attached directly to the flat bed, like part # RP30054. This would indeed be a custom installation, as there aren't any install kits available for this application. The exact install procedure would depend on the nature of the truck bed as well the opinion of the installer. Be sure to use a professional welder who's experienced in trailer and towing work.

The hitch would usually install so that the king pin would sit directly centered over the rear axle. You'll also need to ensure that the flat bed isn't too long, or the rear corners of the flatbed could contact the front of the fifth wheel, under the loft during turns.
