Updated 10/21/2014 | Published 10/20/2014

Question:

What do you recommend for carrying two bikes with both wheels on on the roof of a 4 dr BMW328 2010? I have no rack at all for the car, so need the mounts, racks and the bike carriers. We'll carry bikes only 20 miles, trying to find something econimical?? Thank you!!

When it comes to a roof rack for your 2010 BMW 328, I recommend going with the Rhino-Rack System with Vortex Aero Crossbars, # RRVA106B-2, # RRRLKVA, # DK292. This roof rack not only looks great but the aerodynamic crossbars provide a much quieter ride.

In addition to the roof rack, you will also need a bike carrier. For a carrier that allows you to transport the bike with both wheels still mounted, I suggest going with the Thule UpRide Wheel-Mount Bike Carrier # TH599000. You will need to get two of these to be able to carry both bikes, but it will allow you to carry two bikes without removing any wheels.

Since you mention that you are looking for an economical way to haul your bikes, my choice would be to take a look at our trunk mounted bike racks. The Thule OutWay, # TH45JV, has to be one of my favorites due to it being easy to set-up, load, and the fact that it looks great.

Some have concerns that a trunk mounted bike rack may damage the vehicle. Here are a few tips that can considerably reduce the risk. 1) Make sure the surface of the rack and vehicle are clean and free of any debris. A good coat of quality car wax applied to the vehicles finish will also provide extra protection. 2) Installation instructions should be precisely followed. 3) Rack should be removed when not in use. 4) Rack weight capacity should be strictly adhered to.

If you plan on carrying women's, children's or alternative framed bikes, I recommend an adapter bar like the Swagman Easy-Out, # 64005. This bar attaches between the seat post and the handlebar stem and allows the bike to be carried more evenly in the carrier while providing more ground clearance.

I have included a couple videos for you to check out.
