Recommended Roof Rack and Track System for Truck Topper to Carry Canoe on 2012 Toyota Tundra CrewMax

Question:

I own a 2012 Toyota Tundra Crewmax with a Raider Vagabond Elite topper. I want to haul a 17 ft canoe on top. What roof rack systems to you recommend to install on top of the topper? Do you recommend a rack system to go across the front of the cab at the front doors to help hold the canoe down? What brands/parts would I need? Is there an advantage, pros/cons between the different brands? Any recommendation would be appreciated. Thanks!

We can get you the parts needed to install a roof rack on your truck topper so you can haul your canoe. There are advantages to systems in regards to quality and value, and for your application the best fit is from Rhino-Rack, who is known for their quality, which is consistent with other brands, but often not with as high a price tag. What I recommend is:

- Rhino-Rack Aero Bar Roof Rack for Camper Shells - Track Mount # Y02-490 (Silver) or # Y02-490B (Black)

This will give you 59 inch crossbars on your camper shell, and for a carrier I recommend the Yakima KeelOver Rooftop Canoe Carrier with Tie-Downs # Y04069.

And while you can add a roof rack to your 2012 Toyota Tundra, that would not be the most budget-friendly option, and we can save you some money while getting you the same result with a load extender, the Erickson Big Bed Load Extender # EM07600-07601.

This extender will extend up to 64 inches high above your 2" hitch to give you more support for your canoe if you need it. If you don't have a trailer hitch for your 2012 Toyota Tundra I recommend the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75527.

I have added links to instruction manuals and video reviews for you to check out as well.

Question:

Thanks for getting back to me. If I were to install a rack across the front at the doors, what product do you recommend? Isn't there a rack that "clamps" to the door frame? I don't want a bed extender because I have a trailer and also want to open the topper/tailgate without something in my way. What about height of roof racks? I'm also interested in low profile. Thanks

Happy to help and there is absolutely a clamp-on system that you can use on your 2012 Toyota Tundra CrewMax that is low-profile. Both racks, one from Rhino-Rack and the other from Inno, will be approximatley 3-1/2" to 4" above your Tundra's roof while other racks are approximatley 1-1/2" to 2" taller than that. The racks are:

Inno Roof Rack:
- Inno Aero Crossbars # INXB130-2
- Inno Flush Feet for Aero Crossbars # INXS200
- Custom Fit Kit for Inno XS200, XS250, and INSU-K5 Roof Rack Feet # INK742

OR

Rhino-Rack Roof Rack
- Rhino-Rack ROC25 Roof Rack for Naked Roofs # RR64YR

These will clamp onto your Tundra and give your roof the needed rack to help support your kayak. Either rack will work in conjunction with the Rhino-Rack Aero Bar Roof Rack for Camper Shells - Track Mount # Y02-490 (Silver) or # Y02-490B (Black) and Yakima KeelOver Rooftop Canoe Carrier with Tie-Downs # Y04069.

Question:

Thanks again for the info. Do you sell a single bar roof rack for going between the front doors of the truck by any manufacturer? If I bought a rack system to go on my topper, I wouldn't want to buy an additional pair of roof racks. I would only need one for the front of the truck. Thanks

Happy to help, and yes, there is one single-bar rack you can use, from Rhino-Rack. It is made up of the following parts:

- Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbar # RRVA150B (Black) or # RRVA150S (Silver)
- Rhino-Rack 2500 Series Legs for Vortex Aero Crossbars - Qty 2 # RRRLKVAH
- Custom DK Fit Kit for 2 Rhino-Rack 2500 Series Roof Rack Legs # DK079H

This will give you a single-bar rack for your 2012 Tundra CrewMax like you wanted.
