How to Measure for the Correct Grease Cap or Bearing Protector for a Boat Trailer

Updated 09/02/2014 | Published 08/30/2014

Question:

I just bought a 2000 sea ray 180 with a shorelander single axle trailer. I want to order some bras or something to protect the bearings from water getting in there. They are a mess. The inside diameter looks to be 1 inch and 14/16ths. Please help, Thanks

It sounds like you need a grease cap or bearing protectors. The Bearing Buddy Bra, # BB19B, that you referenced covers the Bearing Buddy Bearing Protectors, like part # BB1980A. In order to choose the correct grease cap or bearing protector, I strongly recommend using a precise measuring tool such as a dial caliper. Hubs can have bores that differ by only a few thousandths of an inch, so getting an exact measurement will help us choose the correct cap for you.

Check out the photo I attached. Use a dial caliper to measure the inner diameter of the hub bore. At this time we do not have a grease cap that would work well with the 1-7/8 (same as 1-14/16) inch measurement that you gave, so we want to make sure we are getting an exact measurement down to the closest thousandth of an inch. Using a tape measure will give us a ball park measurement, but not an exact measurement. You may need a Bearing Protector, like part # BB1810, which fits hub bores with a 1.810 inch inner diameter or a bearing protector like part # BB1938 which fits a hub bore with a 1.938 inner diameter.
