How to Find Replacement Hubs for PWC Trailer

Updated 08/19/2014 | Published 08/17/2014

Question:

Hi - I picked up a small used trailer jet ski or 12foot boat that sat a while and needs new bearings and hubs. The brand may be Seminole. Existing bearings and hubs do not have numbers, or may not have fit right when they were put on frankly. The axle is 1 1/4inch square and only 38 1/2inch spring center to spring center. The spindle is 1inch in diameter, with a 1 1/2inch wide 1/4inch collar before the square part begins. So, at the corners of the square blank, where it becomes the 1 1/4inch collar, there is a dog ear of metal, but on the flats of the axle, there is no elevation between the collar and the square side. Since I assume the seal needs to back up against something solid all the way around, I assume the seal should have a 1inch ID, same as the inner and outer bearings, and butt up against the collar. This belief is reinforced by the fact that when I tried a kit from a local store with a seal having a 1 1/4inch ID. The seal rode up on the collar and stopped against the dog ears of the square axle. The castle nut turned all the way down to the end of the threads and there was still some slop. The cotter pin would not engage the castle peaks since the nut was so far in. So - the hub went about 1/2inch too far on, which is the same as the width of the collar. Is there a hub kit with bearings and seal, ALL with a 1inch ID? Everything I find has a seal with an ID larger than the inner bearing ID. I need hubs as well as bearings / seals - existing items rusted badly and possibly not the right parts to begin with. Thanks for your help.

Spindle measurements need to be taken to the thousandth of an inch so you would have to use dial or digital calipers to take the measurements since there are no bearing numbers on the bearings. I have included a picture that shows the measurements needed.

We have one seal that has a 1 inch inner diameter, # CE16305A, but it is designed to fit a 3/4 inch spindle, not a 1 inch. Measurements are going to be key here.

It is possible that we will not have hubs, bearings, and seals and if that happens then it would be best to replace the axle so that you can get some standard parts that have readily available replacements. I have included a link to the right to the axles that we carry. You would likely need to look at the axle-less systems given the short axle on the trailer.
