Parts Recommendations For Flat Towing 2012 Jeep Liberty Sport Behind A Motorhome

Updated 08/15/2014 | Published 08/14/2014

Question:

I have a 2012 Jeep Liberty Sport with a disability scooter carrier and scooter mounted on the rear via the hitch. I estimate the total weight of everything is probably 5200 - 5300 lbs. I want to flat tow my liberty behind my class A motorhome. Can you recommend a proper base plate and tow bar for this unit. Thank you,

You will want to check with your local DOT to make sure you can tow a vehicle with a scooter carrier and scooter attached to the rear of your 2012 Jeep Liberty Sport.

I recommend the Blue Ox Base Plates, part # BX1131. This bolts to the chassis and requires no welding for installation. The tabs are easily removed for a more inconspicuous look, and includes all the necessary hardware for installation. I have attached an installation video for these base plates on a 2012 Liberty you can check out.

The tow bar I recommend is the Blue Ox Alpha Tow Bar, part # BX7380. This tow bar has a capacity of 6,500 lbs and attaches to the trailer hitch on your RV. The self-aligning design makes it much easier to hook up, even when on surfaces that are not level. This system includes safety chains. I have attached a product review video for this tow bar.

Next, the system I recommend for lighting is the Hopkins Tow Bar Wiring # HM56204. I have linked the installation instructions.

When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the connections and helps prevent corrosion.

Most states now require a supplemental braking system when flat-towing. I recommend the Blue Ox Tow Bar Braking System # BLU37TR. This is a wireless proportional brake system that applies the brakes in direct proportion to the motorhome brakes.

I have attached some helpful articles about flat-towing you can check out.
