Lowering a Boat Trailer by 2 Inches so it Will Fit in a Garage
Updated 08/07/2014 | Published 08/06/2014 >
Question:
I have a boat on a trailer that needs to be about an inch or 2 lower than it is right now. It is currently fitted with Carlilse 215/75D15 tires, with a capacity of 1870 lbs. I measure the diameter to be 26. Is there a smaller diameter and or lower profile tire available that will lower this rig by the 1 to 2 inches I need to get it into a garage? I dont want to reduce the existing load capacity of 1870 Lbs. PS, I bought my trailer hitch and wiring kit from etrailer. Great products and customer service.

To drop down to the 2 inches you need from a 26 inch diameter you would have to go all the way down to a 13 inch tire and wheel (175/80-13) but you would lose the capacity. But there is a way that you may be able to go lower.
You would have to replace the suspension hangers on the trailer with shorter ones. This will only work if the trailer has leaf spring suspension. If the trailer has a torsion axle then you would need to reposition the axle, a job best done by a qualified professional in a trailer shop.
I have included a link to the hangers we carry. Any welding will need to be done by a qualified professional welder.
