Complete Hitch, 7-Way Wiring, and Brake Controller Setup for a 2027 Mazda CX-50

Published 11/04/2026

Question:

I have a 2027 Mazda CX-50 with the 2.5 turbo engine and no factory tow package. We're looking at a small camper with electric brakes, and my Mazda doesn't have a hitch or trailer wiring yet. What all would I need to get it ready to tow, including a brake controller?

Hey Andrew! For your 2027 Mazda CX-50 with the 2.5 turbo engine, I recommend the following setup to get you ready to tow your camper:

-etrailer Class III Trailer Hitch Receiver # e55XV

-Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Way Connector # C45FV

-Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7

-Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller # RED52VR

-etrailer Adjustable Ball Mount # e66PR

-etrailer Anti-Rattle Hitch Collar # e38FV

The hitch bolts directly to your Mazda's frame, and the Curt wiring harness plugs into the factory taillight connectors without splicing. The # ETBC7 converts your 4-way to a 7-way and provides the additional wiring needed for the Redarc brake controller.

The Liberty is simple, reliable, and won't take up space in your cab. The main unit installs behind the dash, so only the knob is visible, giving it an OEM appearance. This is a proportional brake controller so you'll get smooth braking based on the deceleration of your vehicle.

The adjustable ball mount # e66PR lets you dial in the height to keep your camper level, and the anti-rattle collar # e38FV helps eliminate movement between the ball mount and hitch receiver. Just make sure the trailer's loaded weight stays within the capacity of your Mazda and towing components.

What camper are you planning to tow?

We're looking at a small single-axle camper with a 2" coupler. I haven't measured the hitch height yet, but I like the adjustable ball mount since we also have a utility trailer. Will the # e66PR work for both?

@AndrewP yes, the # e66PR is a great option for towing both trailers. It has 2" and 2-5/16" hitch balls and lets you adjust the height for each trailer, so you can keep them level without needing separate ball mounts. Just make sure the required rise or drop falls within its adjustment range.
