Adding DeeMaxx Disc Brakes to Existing 3,500-lb Boat Trailer Hubs

Updated 10/21/2026 | Published 10/20/2026

Question:

My single-axle boat trailer has a 3,500-lb axle, 5 on 4-1/2 idler hubs with 1/2-inch studs, and 14-inch wheels. There are four-hole brake flanges behind the hubs. Can I keep those hubs and add the DeeMaxx disc brakes? I'd like electric over hydraulic, and the brake-line route from the tongue to the axle is about 16 feet.

Hey John, thanks for providing that helpful information! The DeeMaxx Disc Brake Kit # DE35NR is designed to slip over your existing idler hubs, so you won't have to replace them as long as they're compatible. Your 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern, 1/2" studs, 14" wheels, and 4-bolt brake flanges match the kit's requirements.

For an EOH actuator, I recommend the Hydrastar # HS381-9067. This includes the 1,600-psi actuator, 7-way wiring upgrade, and a breakaway kit. You can pair it with the DeeMaxx Single-Axle Brake Line Kit # DE24SR, which has an 18' main line that will work for the length you described.

You'll also need a compatible brake controller in your tow vehicle. If you can tell me what vehicle you have I can help you find a brake controller if you don't have one already.

Where are you headed next with the boat once you get the brakes installed?

Hey Robin! I'm towing with a 2022 Toyota Highlander XLE V6. I have a 7-way connector installed, but no brake controller. Which Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty would you recommend?

@John thanks! I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED52VR. The Liberty works with electric-over-hydraulic brakes, so it's a great match for your Hydrastar actuator. It is simple, reliable, and doesn't take up space in the cab.
