Tongue Weight Limit for a 10,000 lb BTBRV InstaLatch Ball Mount

Updated 10/19/2026 | Published 10/16/2026

Question:

My trailer is about 8,500 pounds loaded, so I'm under the InstaLatch's 10,000-pound rating. The brochure says 850 pounds of hitch weight before we load it. Is that enough information to know whether the 6-inch drop mount will work?

Hello Curtis! You'll need to check your loaded tongue weight to know for sure. The BTBRV InstaLatch Ball Mount # BTBRV011 is rated for 10,000 lbs of trailer weight, and has a 1,000 lb tongue weight limit. It is certainly possible to be under the towing capacity and still exceed the tongue weight rating.

I recommend using the Big Truck Big RV Tongue Weight Scale # BTBRV44FR or # BTBRV014 to check your actual tongue weight once the trailer is loaded. Both measure up to 2,000 lbs, so you'll know whether you're within the ball mount's capacity.

What kind of trailer are you towing?

It's an enclosed car hauler. Would moving the car forward or backward change the tongue weight enough to matter?

@Curtis absolutely. Moving the car forward increases tongue weight, while moving it backward decreases it. With an 8,500 lb loaded trailer and the InstaLatch's 1,000 lb tongue weight limit, I'd use the scale to check your actual weight after loading. You want enough tongue weight for stable towing without exceeding the ball mount's rating. Your goal should be 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight.

I am a Direct Store Distributor, consistently towing 16k, the tongue weight scale is critical for me to insure I don't exceed maximum tongue weight, you can be well under your maximum tow weight and still significantly overload your tongue rated maximum. The scale lets you know exactly how your distributing the weight.

@GaryM thanks for sharing your experience! With as much towing as you do, it's great to hear how useful the tongue weight scale has been for keeping your loads properly balanced.

I bought one of these scales. The one in the top picture. It worked great. Once you get the tongue weight correct, you can put it in safe storage for the next time. I marked where my car needs to be and I load the car to the same point each time. I thought about buying a hitch that has the gauge built in, but reviews stated they break a lot. Constant up and down on the weight as you drive down the road. Once you have you tongue weight correct, no need to have the scale on the hitch. Good Luck !!!

@Dominic thanks for the feedback! Marking where you load the car is a great way to keep things consistent, and having the scale available to double-check your tongue weight when needed is always a good idea.
