Options For Carrying A Heavy E-Bike In A 1-1/4" Trailer Hitch

Updated 10/19/2026 | Published 10/15/2026

Question:

I am trying to identify a bike rack that fits in a1.25” receiver that can hold an 85-90 pound fat tire ebike. Do you have one? I haven’t found a good way to search your site for one. Thank you.

Hi Alex!

The closest option we have is going to be the Saris MHS DUO Bike Rack for 1 Bike - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Wheel Mount # SAR23MR. This can be used in a 1-1/4" trailer hitch, can handle a bike that weighs up to 80 pounds, and can handle tires up to 5" wide. So if that 85 to 90 pounds is with the battery attached, you should be able to remove the battery and use this bike rack. The only other thing you need to take into account is if your bike has fenders. This can and will interfere with those (see included image). If you don't have fenders, this will likely be your best bet.

If you do have fenders though, your only option is going to be something like the 19x47 Curt Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Steel - 300 lbs # C18110. This has plenty of capacity and could carry your bike with or without the battery. It will also fit a 1-1/4" hitch. However, you would need tiedowns and a way to hold the bike upright. I would typically recommend the Ultra-Fab # UF48-979030 for this, but it can only fit up to a 2-1/2" wide tire, so it isn't going to work with fat tires. If you bike has fenders and that 85 to 90 pounds is with the battery removed, this carrier will be your best way to go though.

What kind of bike are you wanting to carry? And what vehicle are you wanting to carry it on?

I’ve specifically been looking at the Trek Borrego (class 2), which is 79 pounds with the battery removed, but has 4” tires and fenders. I’m looking at your site this morning I happened across the Hollywood Racks Sport River SE. Wouldn’t that work with those specs?

@AlexG It's possible the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE # HLY74FR could work, but the reason I didn't mention it was due to it only fitting 1-1/4" Class 2 hitches. It cannot be used with the Class 1 hitches. If you let me know what vehicle you are going to be using, I can confirm the fitment.

@LazerS It's a 2019 Honda Accord Hybrid. I don't remember the name of the hitch we installed, but it is the one you recommend for that car. It has the smaller hitch receiver.

@AlexG Gotcha. All the hitches for the 10th generation Accord (18 to 22) are going to be the Class 1 hitches, so I do not recommend using the Sport Rider SE. Unfortunately, there really isn't a bike rack that will handle that kind of weight, fat tires, frond and rear fenders, and be compatible with a Class 1 hitch. At least, not that we carry. It isn't pretty, but I think the # C18110 cargo carrier is going to be the best option in your case.
