Flat Tow Set Up for a 2026 Chevy Colorado 4x4 Trail Boss for Off Road Driving

Updated 10/10/2026 | Published 10/09/2026

Question:

I have a 2018 Chevy Silverado HD 3500 long bed gas v-8 crew cab 4x4 with overload added rear springs, carrying a 2018 Northern Lite 10-2 EX CD SE truck camper. Truck has a Torque Lift SuperHitch, and a 2 beam 36 inch hitch extension. Also a 3 foot 7 way trailer wire extension as well. Pulled a completely manual 2013 Jeep Compass for years, with a now beat up folding Torque Lift tow bar. And related wiring. All worked well Now trading in Jeep Compass for new 2026 Chevy Colorado 4x4 Trail Boss with built in 3 inch factory lifted chassis. Looking for best recommendations and prices for flat tow setup for the Chevrolet Colorado Trail Boss. Looking for recommendations for Colorado base plates, tow bar, cables, wiring, etc. Thinking about hd, as I pull and go many off-road places few would venture. Thinking E Trailer XHD non-binding Tow Bar for Roadmaster style base plates, RV mount. Is there a towed car mount, like I currently have? Need recommendations for complete packages, including baseplates, tow bar, cables, wiring, etc.

Hi Don,

The etrailer XHD Non-Binding Tow Bar part # e64ZR is intended for use with crossbar style base plates. Since you said you go off road a good amount, I suggest going with direct connect base plates instead. The reason being that the crossbar style base plates require an adapter bar that hangs pretty low in front of the vehicle and get caught or rocks, roots, etc that you may be driving over. The etrailer XHD Non-Binding Tow Bar part # e84ZR is the same tow bar for Roadmaster base plates but for direct connect style plates instead. To go with that you'll want the Roadmaster Direct Connect Base Plates part # RM28GR; trimming the spoiler, air dam, or plastic fascia may be needed for installation. I've linked a video showing the plates being installed on a 2026 Colorado so you can see any mods that may need to be made. The etrailer XHD part # e84ZR is out of stock currently, but if you aren't able to wait, the Roadmaster Falcon 3HD Non-Binding Tow Bar part # RM27NQ is in stock and also a good option. I'll list out the other parts for you below.

-Roadmaster Universal Wiring Kit with 7-way tp 6-way Coiled Adapter Cord part # RM-15267

-Roadmaster Battery Disconnect for Gas Vehicles part # RM-766, necessary to protect the truck's electric power steering system and parking brake

-Blue Ox Towed Vehicle Battery Charge Line Wiring Harness Part # BLU44ER to keep the battery charged while towing as the battery will still power the breakaway system

-Demco Stay-IN-Play DUO Flat Tow Braking System for RVs with Hydraulic Brakes part # SM99251, I recommend going with a permanently installed braking system instead of a portable because uneven terrain could cause the portable unit to shift and not be in position to press the brake pedal properly

-Roadmaster Tow Defender part # RM-4750, since the truck is new and you'll be off road, it can help protect from debris and rocks flying up that could damage the truck.

Where do you usually drive off road when you're towing?
