How do I adjust the ball mount to not have excessive play on the ball?

Hey Scott.
The Curt Channel-Mount Coupler # C25328 is designed to fit Curt adjustable channels like the 3-position # C48610 and 5-position # C48650. There is no adjustment on this coupler to tighten it around the 2-5/16" ball, so if you're getting excessive play I'd also check the ball size and inspect the ball and latch for wear.
If you already have a channel, you can verify fit by checking that it has a 3" inside width, 5/8" diameter mounting holes, and 2" center-to-center hole spacing. The coupler itself is about 2-7/8" wide where it slides into the channel.
What channel and trailer are you working with? If it's a different size, let me know and I can try to find the correct ball mount. It's also possible your existing holes are oblong or something along those lines.

I’ve had the hitch for about a year and there is surely play in it with the correct size ball. I even bought a new receiver and ball just to make sure. I’ve never had an issue, but it is an annoyance while hauling with no load. Hitch is on a 24 ft 14,000 lb deckover.
