- Modern Power Center Upgrade for a 1974 Argosy With Separate AC and DC Panels

Updated 10/05/2026 | Published 10/02/2026

Question:

I am looking to replace the converter in my 30 amp travel trailer. It is a 1974 Argosy with a metal shoe box size converter charger. It has 2 20 amp ac breakers in a separate electrical box, then 5 /12 volt circuits in the shoe box unit using glass fuses-3/20 amp, 1 30 amp vehicle, 1 50 amp battery, and a neutral lug. It continues to work satisfactorily so change is not an emergency. What unit would you recommend for replacement. The trailer is still vintage layout and appliances. 13.5 roof a/c, 6 electric outlets, 12v pump, lights, small 12v fan in ceiling vent, original refrigerator ac/gas, original manual jack converted to 12v power. Look forward to your suggestions. Bill L

Hey Bill,

For your 1974 Argosy, I’d go with the Progressive Dynamics 4000 Series Power Center # PD4045KA. Your old “shoebox” converter sounds like it is doing both the 12V conversion/charging and the DC fuse distribution, so the # PD4045KA would modernize all of that in one shot with a 45-amp converter, AC breaker panel, and blade-style 12V fuse panel.

That route would mean removing the old converter/fuse box and likely the separate breaker box, then moving your existing AC and five 12V circuits into the new power center. Some cabinet or panel modification may be needed to fit the new enclosure.

If you want to keep the existing AC breaker box, another option is to use a stand-alone converter/charger like # PD69RR along with a separate DC distribution panel like # WF22FR. That would replace the functions of the old shoebox while leaving the AC side alone, but it does mean mounting and wiring two separate components.

For the cleanest long-term setup, I’d still lean toward the # PD4045KA.

Are you planning to replace everything in the system?

I installed the progressive dynamics 4000 in my 2010 sunny brook Lil dog bumper pull. I had to look it up as a big dog 5th wheel. It was almost identical to the converter that was originally in my unit. All of the connections were very similar and it works perfectly. I am NOT an electrician by an means I disconnected and connected each wire 1 at a time and it went great. The converter comes with downloadable instalation instructions. I highly recommend etrailer and the products they supply.

Thank you for your information. The PD4045KA sounds like the way to go when I get ready. Getting everything in one box is how I prefer to set it up. My old converter unit is screwed to the floor in the Bath closet and the AC box mounted to the wall inside the closet. I will need to build a mounting space in that same area which is not a problem. I may combine this replacement with a relocation of shore power entrance into this same closet. Currently it enters under the bumper storage cover and creates a rodent interstate due to the space on each side of the 30 amp cord even with the lid closed and screen wire attempted blocking.I plan to order from Etrailer when I’m ready. Thanks again. Bill L

@Bill Thanks Bill! That sounds like a good plan. The # PD4045KA should make for a much cleaner setup, and moving the shore power entrance into that closet sounds like a nice upgrade too. Glad we could help! I'm here if you need help in the future.
