Can E Rated 80 PSI Tires On A 16" Aluminum Wheel Be Upgraded To 110 PSI G Rated Tires?

Updated 09/29/2026 | Published 09/27/2026

Question:

I have a goodyear endurance st255/85R/16 mounted a an aluminum bullet style rim rated at 3750 lb. This is an E rated tire with max psi @80 hot or cold. My question is,.... can I mount a G rated 16 ply tire with a 110 psi rating on this rim and operate safely and durable. This is for a 44ft 5th wheel rv.

Hi Jim!

A 16" rim should have no problems handling 110 psi with a G rated tire, but the valve stem is another story. There is a decent chance that it will be rated that high, but it's a chance I wouldn't feel 100% comfortable taking if I'm being totally honest.

With that being said, if you haven't already done so (or if the wheels already came with them), I would upgrade the valve stems to metal, like the Americana Metal, Bolt-In Valve Stem - 1-1/4" Long # AM20906. These are rated for tires that use over 100 psi and would be more than adequate to handle G rated tires. And they handle TPMS better than rubber ones, which is a big plus in my book.

One other thing to note, you will be limited to the lowest rated component. This will likely be the wheel itself since you mentioned it being rated to 3,750 pounds, so it's definitely something to keep in mind.

What kind of 5th wheel are you wanting to do this upgrade on?

Thank you, Lazer S. That is great feed back and I agree with your assessment of the weight rating on the rim being the determining factor. Seeing as im not increasing the load itself, converting to the metal stems should insure a reliable combination with the upgraded 16 ply tires. Thanks again and much prosperity! Gratefully. Jim
