Parts And Process To Replace Roof Membrane On Older Camper Where EDPM Meets PVC Material

Updated 09/25/2026 | Published 09/23/2026

Question:

I need to replace roughly the front half of the original roof membrane on my 1996 Play-Mor 2350 Aero Premier. I think that the OEM membrane is EPDM. Will the LaSalle Bristol membrane adhere to the EPDM if I use the correct adhesive and overlap it by maybe 6 inches? I coated the OEM membrane in 2000, using the blue primer and the white topcoat. Cant recall the brand, of course. The coating is holding up well. Ill have to confirm that with a power wash, though, and also get down to the original EPDM for the overlap. If that will work. Thanks.

Hello,

The LaSalle Bristol XTRM membrane in # 344270KIT25 is PVC, and it can certainly be used to replace the damaged front portion of your older EPDM roof.

I would not use the included EXP 90 adhesive to simply glue a 6" overlap of the new PVC directly onto the old EPDM. That adhesive is better suited for bonding the new XTRM membrane to the roof decking.

For the section you're replacing, I would remove the old membrane and coating down to a clean, solid roof deck and adhere the new XTRM membrane directly to that.

Where the new PVC meets the remaining EPDM, you can bridge and seal that transition with the Quick Roof Repair Tape # QR44FR. It is 6" wide and its adhesive is specifically compatible with both EPDM and PVC, so it is made for sealing a seam like this.

You were also on the right track with removing the old coating. I would get down to clean, sound EPDM anywhere the repair tape will be applied, then clean the area thoroughly and roll the tape firmly into place.

That would give you the new PVC bonded to the roof deck, with the transition between the two roofing materials sealed independently rather than relying on the roof adhesive itself.

Do you normally store that rig outside? If so, that's impressive that the original roof lasted that long, in my opinion.

The Play-Mor trailer has been kept outdoors since new. It was built using butyl tape instead of the putty tape that was common at the time. All of my plans for a partial re-roof are contingent on a full inspection. After 30 years, I probably ought to replace the air conditioner gasket while I am about it. Do you agree? I think I should then recoat the entire roof when finished. Can you recommend a coating that will work with the old EPDM and the new PVC, as well as the repair tape? Lastly, would I run the repair tape over the side edges and cover the taped seam with butyl and the aluminum edges, as if it was a single sheet of membrane?

@MattS Hey Matt, Yes, if you're removing the A/C during the roof work, I would replace the roof gasket at the same time rather than reuse the old one. If it's the standard 14" by 14" ish size, then # CAM25071 would work. I also would not recoat the entire finished roof. The new XTRM PVC membrane is designed to be maintenance-free, and the # QR44FR repair tape is made to remain exposed. If the remaining EPDM still needs coating after inspection, I would just recoat that older section with an EPDM-compatible product. For the repair tape seam, yes, I would run it completely across the roof and down over the side edges far enough that it gets captured underneath the aluminum trim. Then reinstall the trim with fresh butyl tape behind it and seal everything normally.

@MattS Hey Matt, what you’re going to want to do is sheet over your roof before you glue down the new roof membrane . What we do at the shop is we go to Lowe’s buy revolution ply. It’s 5 mm thin plywood and that gets glued and screwed down to the original roof. The purpose for doing this is so the new membrane has something new to adhere to. If you try to glue the new membrane to the old one you’re going to have a lot of issues with adhesion. So once you sheet over your old roof with Revolution ply, you’re gonna cut out all your vent holes make sure they’re nice and smooth and then you’ll glue the new roof down. The best way to glue this roof membrane down it’s going to be with a soapy spray bottle and shower squeegees. You’re gonna roll out about a foot and a half to 2 feet at a time and get all the bubbles out and work the membrane down with the squeegees. Once you’re done leave it alone for at least two or three days. I would definitely not do this in the direct sunlight. The glue is going to dry too fast so I would try to find a shady place.
