Replacement Hinge/Lid Support For A Yakima SpaceCadet Roof Box

Updated 09/18/2026 | Published 09/12/2026

Question:

I need a pair of Lift Assist type mechanisms for my Yakima Space Cadet Roof Top storage box. When I search the Web, Im directed to your site, and I get a search response for the Yakima of: 8880634, But Im not seeing any other information that confirms that option in the FAQs. Can you suggest what WILL work to hold the Space Cadet up while its being secured to the Crossbars and being loaded? Perhaps something as simple as a Steel Over-Center bracket that will hold the top up for loading and allow it to down for Transport?

Hi Kevin!

I do have a potential option for you, but Yakima does not make official replacement hinges for the discontinued SpaceCadet cargo box anymore, unfortunately.

That said, many older Yakima boxes can use the somewhat generic Replacement Lid Support for Yakima Cargo Boxes # 8880683. However, you will need to measure the hole spacing on your old hinge to see if this will fit. Legacy supports should measure about 11 inches extended and 3-3/8 inches center-to-center closed. If your measurement is different, let me know what you got and I can see if there is a better fit for you.

What are you using your SpaceCadet to transport? And what vehicle are you loading it on? Been a while since I saw one of these roof boxes.

The bracket worked well for my cargo box. It was a little bit difficult to hammer on the bracket. The folks from Campmore (where I originally bought it) were very helpful to me getting it installed). I was very pleased with how well it is working.

I purchased these hinges for my Yakima Exo Gearlocker Box as the OG hinges failed. Per what Lazer said - if the measurements fit - then these are a good replacement for you. The hinges hold the lid up when the box is open without any assistance and I was able to install them myself. Good luck! Kristin

LS, we have a No Boundaries travel trailer. As it’s a overlanding style, high ground clearance trailer, it’s over 10ft tall! It pushes a TON of wind going down the road. I bought this “oldy but a goodie” carrier so I could fab some pie-shaped hinged side supports that will fold down on piano hinges and lie down in the box and fold up to support the top when raised UP. I’d have to add some fasteners to hold those in position. Maybe even fasten some aluminum U channel to the inner side of the top for the plywood pie shaped fold down/fold UP Sides to “nest” in. My goal is to mimic those air dams you see on the roofs of Semi Trucks. Those dams are over $1,000. I bought this for $100. I’m a little concerned about how unstable the lid might be in th wind, even though the Plan in my HEAD is considering the potential of attaching an adjustable tie down strap attached to the upper corners on each side. Sounds pretty Rube Goldburger-ish in my head, but HEY… it could be a home Run OR a total strike-out! Only time will tell?!
