Can I Add a Lift Assist to the Fold-Down Steps on My 2021 Grand Design Fifth Wheel?

Question:

I have a 2021 Grand Design 5th wheel , model 150. The previous owner installed a step that hinges out from the interior of the unit verses coming out underneath the door on the outside. It does not have the spring assembly on it to help lower or raise the steps. It is heavy and can surprise you if you dont pay attention lowering it. I am looking for the spring assembly that would mount to the floor and to the steps to assist in lowering and raising the steps. Thank you.

Thanks for writing in!

I know exactly what you mean about those steps being heavy, and without the lift assist they can definitely get away from you when lowering them.

The first thing I will need to know is which brand and model of steps the previous owner installed. If these are MORryde StepAbove steps that were originally made without the strut assist, MORryde does not offer the spring/strut assembly as an add-on kit. Their replacement struts, like # MR56DR, are only designed for StepAbove models that originally came with the strut-assist hardware.

You can respond directly to this email with a picture of the steps, and I can help identify what you have. If you can find the model number and serial number on the steps, you can send me those instead and I can look into the correct lift-assist option for you.

How long have you had the camper? Where did you take it for the first adventure?

They used to. I believe it has been discontinued. I had see them in the past and when I was going to buy one, they were gone. They were available on Amazon. I ended up buying a new step assembly to get the assist. Good luck in your adventure .

@Eric Thanks for jumping in and sharing your experience! That is really helpful, especially knowing you ran into the same issue trying to find the lift assist separately. Sometimes hearing from someone who has actually dealt with the same setup is the best information we can get. I appreciate you taking the time to help Steve out!
