Will Bolt Ran Through Link in Trailer Frame be Adequate for Trailer Safety Chains

Updated 09/08/2026 | Published 09/07/2026

Question:

Ive owned a 5x10 open utility trailer for 32 years and just realized that the safety chains are actually just one length of chain with one bolt holding one link in the center of the single chain to the center towing frame bar. Im thinking this isnt sufficient, but you tell me. In 32 years I probably have less than 500 towing miles on the trailer but planning to use more extensively to haul my motorcycle now that Im retired. If the current chains are insufficient, Im thinking to drill two holes in each rail of the angle iron A-frame, attach two separate chains with quick links through those holes for future length adjustment and then spring-loaded clevis or S-hooks at the other end of the chains. What do you think?

Hey Robert, it really depends on the diameter of the bolt and it's overall condition as it stands today but what you have is very common and I would not assume it's insufficient. Now if you want additional peace of mind and want to go with a heavier duty setup there's really nothing wrong with that either and what you described would work perfect for that.
