Question:

Good morning, I have a Yakima swing arm style 4 bicycle rack that has a locking/tightening system with a red handle. It’s been a great unit, however I’ve noticed a little bit of play or slop now in the unit that I cannot get rid of by tightening the red handle. Due to the quick release mechanism, there’s no hitch pin in this unit either. Is there a way I can get this play removed? Or is this unit under warranty? I purchased from etrailer earlier this year in May or June I believe.

Hey Joshua, thanks for reaching out. I do see you ordered the Yakima FullSwing Bike Rack # Y02465 from us a few months ago. This rack uses the red locking SpeedKnob and an AutoPin rather than a traditional hitch pin.

The first thing I want you to try is to have someone lift and wiggle the rack slightly while you tighten the red SpeedKnob as tight as you can by hand. If the play remains and the knob is no longer expanding the wedge firmly inside the receiver, the SpeedKnob and Wedge Assembly # 8880508 is replaceable and is the first part I’d look at.

As far as warranty, this rack does come with a limited lifetime warranty, so normal wear is excluded, but if the wedge or tightening mechanism has actually failed, I think it is definitely worth pursuing a warranty claim here. I suggest trying the steps I listed above first, but if the problem persists or gets worse and you want to do a warranty claim just let me know and I can get the ball rolling on that.

Thanks Jesse. I did try to tighten as my wife wiggled the rack system, and still not able to get the play out of the system. I think we should pursue a warranty claim on that mechanism.

@JesseM thanks! I’ll keep an eye out in my email. I forgot to answer the rest of your question: We have 1 adult fat tire bike, 1 adult Mountain bike, and 2 guardian children’s bikes. None of the bikes are e-bikes.
