Is It Possible to Add A Ramp To Swagman XC2 Bike Rack for Easier Bike Loading?

Question:

I have a Swagman bike hitch and bike rack. The rack is the kind with hoops for the tires to sit in. Last year at age 86 I had a bike accident and tore my rotator cuff and can no longer pick up my bike 14 to put it on the rack. I am wondering if you have a foldable loading ramp that I can attach to help get the bike on the rack. Right now I am dependent on someone else going with me on out of town rides which is really cramping my bike riding. Thank you for any help you can give me.

Geez, Jo, I’m so sorry that happened. A torn rotator cuff sounds painful, and I can understand how frustrating it must be to have your bike rides depend on someone else coming along. Sadly, there isn’t a safe way to add a loading ramp to your Swagman XC2 Bike Rack for 2 Bikes, part # S64650. The XC2 uses wheel hoops rather than full length trays, so there isn’t a secure structural point for an official ramp to attach.

I really wish there were a way to add one because it would open up so many more opportunities for people who have trouble lifting their bikes. I know this probably isn’t the answer you were hoping for, but you would need to switch to a rack that is designed to work with a loading ramp. The most affordable option I found is the Swagman Current Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes, part # S64678, paired with the Swagman Ramp and Bridge, part # S32YR. That setup is designed to let you roll the bike onto the rack instead of having to lift it, which could make getting back to those out of town rides much easier.

I know switching racks is probably not what you had in mind, but I’d much rather point you toward a setup that can safely help you load your bike than suggest a adding a ramp that could put you or your bike at risk.

I have a Towne Go class 1 electric bike by Electra. As I recall, weight is 45 pounds.

@JoF Nice, I love those Electrca bikes. The Swagman Current part # S64678 that I mentioned earlier would be your best bet because you can tighten the hooks down to the frame of the bike instead of the wheel since your bike has obstructions over the back wheel. Also since yours is a step through bike, you would need to add an adapter bar part # HRBA-PRO if you don't already have to give the hooks something to hang onto.
