Hey Andrew, thanks for reaching out. The main difference is electrical efficiency. The GE Appliances HE (High Efficiency) Low-Profile RV AC gives you the same cooling capacity and heat-pump functionality as the standard GE Low-Profile model, but it draws less power while running. GE specifically lists the HE version as capable of operating on a 15-amp circuit, making it easier on limited campground power, generators, and RV electrical systems.
For example, comparing the 13.5K HE # GE86RR to the standard 13.5K # GE96RR, both give you 13,500 Btu of cooling, a heat pump, low-profile rooftop design, and the same basic GE control setup. The GE86RR's advantage is lower electrical strain, not additional cooling output.
So,choosing between the two, I recommend the HE version, especially for anyone running the AC from a generator, inverter, 30-amp RV service, or a campground pedestal where available power is limited. You get the same cooling performance while using your available electrical power more efficiently.
Also, keep in mind that if you are replacing an old AC unit, you will need to replace the whole AC system - rooftop unit, distribution box, controller and thermostat. Both of the ACs I mentioned above are complete AC systems, so you get everything you need to replace/upgrade your old unit. Both systems include the components from the upgrade kit you mentioned, so the price of that is included.
What AC unit are you replacing? What RV do you have?
