Avoiding BMW PDC Beeping and Emergency Braking With a Bike Rack

Question:

Hello team, I am looking at the Curt hitch receiver for my 2024 BMW X3 xDrive. Will adding this trigger false beeps when I install an e-bike rack? Will it trigger false beeps with just the hitch receiver? What are my options for avoiding these annoying beeps? It sounds like even adding an aftermarket wiring harness doesnt help. What are my options for avoiding this issue?

Hello Lisa, happy to help.

When it comes to installing the hitch alone, this will not cause any PDC (Park Distance Control) issues as the hitch will be tucked underneath the bumper and out of the detection area of the sensors. Once you add a bike rack you may run into the annoying issue of the car thinking there is something directly behind you.

There are thankfully solutions to avoiding the beeping with your bike rack attached. The easiest one being, simply turning off the PDC feature through your iDrive menu. This will take care of the beeping but won't solve the issue of the Active PDC Emergency Braking feature which allows the car to stop itself if it thinks you're about to hit something. This setting can also be temporarily turned off through the same menu.

Adding an aftermarket wiring harness doesn't always communicate to the vehicle that there is something behind it and so it needs to adjust its PDC settings. So, I recommend switching off the aforementioned features when you plan on using your bike rack, then turning them back on when you don't.

How often are you planning to take the e-bikes out? I just got one recently and absolutely love it.
