Best Replacement For Dometic Fresh Jet 3 Low-Profile AC Unit

Question:

So I replaced my dometic fresh jet 3 with your furrion chill cube fr39TD kit. I need replace the front ac unit now which is a dometic penguin II low profile what’s the best unit to replace it with, the furrion chill box will be to tall to replace the front unit with.

Hey Brian, thanks for reaching out. Since you need to keep the front AC low profile like your Dometic Penguin II, I recommend the GE Appliances Low-Profile RV AC System w/ Heat Pump - 15,000 Btu - Ducted - Black # GE26RR. This is a complete system, so you get the rooftop unit, ducted air distribution box, controller, and wall thermostat.

I like the GE for your setup because the rooftop unit is only 11" tall, so it keeps that low clearance you're looking for instead of putting a taller Chill Cube up front. You also get 15,000 Btu of cooling, quieter airflow, and a built-in heat pump for some extra heat on cooler days. Since you're replacing an older Dometic Penguin II, you'll be replacing the Dometic controls and thermostat with the GE components included in the kit rather than trying to mix the old Dometic controls with the new AC.

That also gives you a nice setup with the 18K Chill Cube in the rear for maximum cooling capacity and the lower-profile GE up front where roof height matters more.

Will that GE unit work with my suburban furnace as well? And how do you compare the GE unit the dometic freshjet 5 low profile

@BrianR Yes, the GE thermostat can control the AC as well as your furnace. The Dometic FreshJet 5 is a little shorter at 10-1/2" tall, but the GE # GE26RR is still only 11" tall, so you are talking about just a 1/2" difference in roof height. The GE gives you the same 15,000 Btu cooling capacity while keeping the low-profile design you need for the front of your RV. The big reason I recommend the # GE26RR for your setup is that it gives you a complete matched system instead of trying to piece together components from your old Penguin II. You get the rooftop AC, heat pump, control board, ducted air distribution components, and wall thermostat all in one kit.

@JesseM and I still use the same communication cable that is running to the dometic thermostats? If not there is no way to route a new communication line it’s the phone jack style. The old control board from the old dometic which was replaced with the furrion is still installed laying in the distribution box of the furrion because the furnace runs off that main Board

@BrianR The GE kit comes with its own thermostat and controls, and it is not designed to communicate through the old Dometic control board and cables. It would require running new wires from the control box to the thermostat.
