Frame Mounted Or Bumper Mounted Hitch For 2018 Keystone Travel Trailer?

Updated 08/28/2026 | Published 08/19/2026

Question:

Im looking at both the frame and bumper hitches to add to the back of my 2018 Keyston Trailer on the back end to utilize a cargo rack. Im looking to carry a generator 224 lbs, Gas 32 lbs, the flat rack, and other items on the rack. I dont know how to figure out what the weight of the rack with all the items loaded on it will create for tongue weight. Do you have any insites on what tonge weight might be or which hitchs would work - bumper or frame? Thank you. John

Hey John, thanks for reaching out. A frame mounted hitch is going to be much better suited for your application, so that's what I recommend. Here is our best frame mounted camper hitch:

- Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver for RVs, 22" to 72" Wide # 13703

The frame mounted hitches are more secure and typically carry higher weight ratings. We have bumper hitches that will technically work, but your carrying capacity would be limited by the weight capacity of your bumper. With the amount of gear you will be carrying, a frame mounted hitch will be stronger and much safer.

The # 13703 hitch can fit frames between 22" and 72" wide, and it can be bolted or welded on. The brackets have a bit of drop built in which helps the receiver clear the bumper. The hitch has a 350 lb tongue weight capacity which will be more than enough for your generator, fuel and a bit of gear. You'll also need to factor in the weight of your cargo carrier which will range from like 45 lbs -70 lbs depending on which one you use.

The Benton MoveHitch 60x24 Cargo Carrier for 2" Hitches # B38VR is a great lightweight option that weighs only 45 lbs. That will leave you room for about 50 lbs of gear.

What kind of gear do you need to carry?
