2 Inch Frame Mounted Hitch for a 2002 Jayco 312FKS Travel Trailer With E-Bike Rack

Question:

Looking for a rear frame mount hitch with a 2 receiver for my travel trailer........ Im guessing class III. The trailer is a 2002 Jayco 312FKS. Im looking for a solid hitch for use with my double ebike carrier. Thanks

Hi Duane, the Curt Adjustable Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C13701 is the one I’d look at for your 2002 Jayco 312FKS, provided your trailer’s frame measures between 18 and 51 inches wide. It gives you the 2 inch Class III receiver you’re after and is specifically designed for use on RVs and travel trailers. It can be bolted or welded to box, C channel, or I beam frames, so it makes for a nice solid frame mounted setup rather than relying on the bumper to support your e bikes.

The hitch itself has a 500 lb tongue weight capacity, but there is one thing I’d check before loading the bikes. Your bike rack needs to be specifically approved by its manufacturer for use on the back of a travel trailer because it will see quite a bit more bouncing and leverage back there than it would behind your tow vehicle.

If you can measure the distance from the outside of one frame rail to the outside of the other, I can help you confirm the # C13701 before you order it. What double e bike rack are you planning to use with the Jayco?

Hi, thanks for replying. My travel trailer utilizes rectangular box frame metal and measures 66.5 inches (inside to inside) between the frame. My bike carrier is quite heavy duty, however it has no brand name. It came free with our Mokwheel Asphalt ebikes. Thanks, Duane Toenyan

@DuaneT Hi Duane, thanks for getting those measurements for me. At 66.5 inches between the frame rails, the Curt # C13701 I originally recommended is going to be too narrow for your Jayco. Instead, you can use the Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch Receiver for RVs part # 13703. It fits frame widths from 22 to 72 inches and gives you the 2 inch receiver you’re looking for, so your 66.5 inch frame is within its adjustment range. The one thing I’d be cautious about is the bike rack. Since there’s no manufacturer or model information on it, we don’t have a way to confirm that it’s approved for use on the back of a travel trailer. That location gives a bike rack quite a workout because there’s considerably more bouncing and movement behind the trailer axle than there is behind a vehicle. Even if the rack feels really heavy duty, I’d want that RV approval before trusting your Mokwheel e bikes back there. Just something to keep in mind!

@DuaneT Oh man, I’m sorry to hear that, Duane. I wouldn’t give up on carrying the bikes with the Jayco just yet though. Since your current rack isn’t approved for the back of a travel trailer, I’d take a look at the Lets Go Aero Jack E Bike Rack part # LGA92ZR instead. It’s actually designed to carry two e bikes on the tongue of a travel trailer, so you can keep the bikes up front rather than hanging them off the rear. It can handle bikes weighing up to 80 lbs each and tires up to 4 1/2 inches wide. We would just want to make sure it fits the front of your Jayco before calling it a done deal. The Jack E works with most tongue jacks up to 23 inches tall and needs 24 1/2 inches of clearance from the center of the jack shaft back to the trailer. The weight of the rack and bikes will also add to your trailer’s tongue weight, so you’ll want to account for that with your towing setup. How much do each of your Mokwheel e bikes weigh?
