Will a Folded Bike Rack Interfere with 2026 Volvo XC40 Rear Automatic Braking?

Updated 08/05/2026 | Published 07/31/2026

Question:

Considering new tray rack… BUT my 2026 Volvo XC 40 has rear braking. Can you tell me if I can leave your rack folded up and still has these automatic functions still activated?

Hey Karl, thanks for reaching out. In most cases, yes, you can leave a tray-style bike rack folded up on your 2026 Volvo XC40, but it will likely affect the rear driver-assistance features. Systems like Rear Automatic Braking, Cross Traffic Alert, and the rear parking sensors use radar and ultrasonic sensors in the rear bumper. A folded bike rack sits directly in their field of view, so the vehicle may disable those features, reduce their effectiveness, or display a warning message until the rack is removed. Sometimes these features can be disabled in the vehicle's settings.

It's simply the Volvo recognizing there's an object behind it all the time. Once the rack is removed, the systems return to normal operation. Sometimes these features can be disabled in the vehicle's settings as well.

What bike rack did you have your eye on? What bikes do you have?
