Replacement Zerk Fitting for Dexter E-Z Lube Axle

Hi I recently purchased bearing kits, brakes, and dust caps from you folks to repair a used 14 PJ trailer with a 3500lb Dexter. Install was smooth. However, when I finished using my grease gun to fill up the hubs using EZLube yes I greased the races well first the grease fitting came out of the spindle when I pulled the grease gun off. This happened on both sides. They almost look like they were pressed in as I saw no thread. Right now the lube holes are covered with the dust caps so should be OK for now. How can I replace the missing grease fittings? Again there is no thread I can see. Thanks for your help.

Hey Dave,
I can definitely understand how that would be frustrating and I'm happy to help!
On Dexter E-Z Lube axles, the grease zerk should be threaded into the end of the spindle. If both zerks pulled out with the grease gun, they likely became damaged or the threads in the spindle may have been compromised.
If the threads in the spindle are still in good shape, you can replace the missing fittings with the Dexter Grease Zerks for E-Z Lube and Nev-R-Lube Axles - Thread-In - 1/4" OD x 5/16" Long #DX76HR. Once the new zerks are installed, you'll be able to continue servicing the hubs normally.
Before installing the new fittings, I'd recommend taking a close look at the threaded holes in the spindles. If the threads are damaged or stripped, the new zerks won't stay in place. In that case, the spindle (or axle) would need to be repaired or replaced, depending on the extent of the damage.
Since your dust caps are installed, the grease passage is protected for now, so there's no immediate concern as long as the trailer isn't losing grease.
When the grease fitting came out, did it unscrew with the grease gun, or did it pull straight out?

OK thanks much I think I will leave things alone and pop the caps from time to time to check. There is no thread in the spindles and I can't justify the cost or effort on such an old beat up trailer. It only does local miles.
